Dissapointing 1st PT (nonschool) visit | Autism PDD

Share

We had our first PT visit outside of school as they cut Gage off at school for being too "functional" during the school day. So basically he can function at school so the state wont pay for his pT anymore. Luckily our insurance WILL pay for PT with docs referral so today was our first visit.
The PTist is AWESOME! Very energetic, very motivating for Gage. Only prob is she said she can do a short 2 month session with Gage to work on some issues with him but a lot of his issues have to do with coordination & she does not think that will improve :( She said she can show me exercises to do with him at home but since she knows I am a single mom she was like "I think he functions really well but he is just not going to be a very physical kid. He has motor sequencing problems and a lot of these kids are not going to improve with weekly PT".
She was really nice about it, I know she just didnt want me wasting my time expecting him to be a star soccer player or something when it just isnt going to happen. She did mention he has very tight hamstrings so I have a 3 times a day stretching regimen for him. She also is going to have me bring his bike in to work on the pedaling a little bit. She said he needs to build his endurance & get more exercise. She also wants him to start doing sit ups because he is very weak through the trunk region. The running problem will only improve with lots of practice.
I just had my hopes up so high that they would be able to "fix" it.

I'm sorry the PT isn't going to be as effective as you hoped.  My son was in a PT play group once a week for about 6 months, and it did help his motor skills a lot.  It was like a gymnastics class, but in a setting that wasn't overstimulating for him.  He won't ever be a fast runner, but he learned to dare more and master more activities, which improved his overall fitness.

It seems weird to make a 6 year old do sit-ups.  Aren't there some fun activities using a big ball that can be used for the same purpose?

Good luck with everything.

I think the sit ups are just for his "trunk" region which is very weak. He is getting a really big tummy buy skinny everywhere else. It is also affecting his posture. I will ask about the big ball idea.
