failed otoacoustic screening | Autism PDD

Sarah failed her hearing test 2x...she never had ear infections but they put tubes in anyway because of her lack of language.  The tubes made her more responsive to noise so I am glad we did it.

My son Christian also failed the school screening tests twice. The school sent him to the county audiologist and they checked his ears and and re-tested him using a different method and he passed. Christian did not understand the directions of the person doing administering the screening test.

Hope you son's hearing is okay

My daughter has had the deated hearing test (brain stem test).. everythinf checked out fine barring "pressure in the left ear"... Should I be retesting??

Yes, retest on the tympanogram, he could have allergies or a COLD!  Mine did ...

Michael had his hearing (otoacoustic)  screening at school last week.  they called to tell me he failed the screening in his left ear.    They said he has a middle ear problem.

Has anyone experienced this?????    Is this something that requires tubes if t is fluid???

Thanks

Carol

We had issues with the hearing test as well when C was 3.  I think C's issue was a flat timpanogram.  We first went to pediatrician who said he had an ear infection.  Whereas most kids will be pretty miserable with an ear infection, my son has an extremely high pain tolerance and never showed any discomfort.  We never would have know about the ear infection if not for the hearing test.  It cleared up with antibiotics but then happened a few more times over the next 6 months - 9 months.  We were then referred to an ENT and wound up putting tubes in at age 4.

The school does a SCREENING.  It is meant to pick up all possible problems.  It does not mean there is a definite problem.  Contact your pediatrician for an appointment.  Explain that your child had a problem with his left ear when screened by the school.  If your child has already been to an ENT, you could contact them instead.

"Many children with autism will have some pervasive ignoring of other people that may render a conventional hearing test ineffective. These children will benefit from having a BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) where electrodes register the brain's response to sound delivered by earphones to the child. In most situations, this test will have to be performed under sedation."

this is what I'm worried about-

because of my son's speech issues the Dr thinks we should do a hearing test to make sure he's hearing all his pitches etc...just in case that is contributing.
however, how the HECK would I get him to DO a hearing test??
even if he heard the sound would he indicate he was hearing them?? I doubt it- or at least he'd be very inconsistent, so how would we know??
