For the past few days my son's new verbal stim has been to make farting noises with his mouth! They aren't very loud or anything, just REALLY annoying. I just keep saying to myself "it could be worse, it could be worse". Farting noises! OK I have to laugh to keep my sanity! I dont even want to know what the other kids at school are thinking! Hopefully he doesn't do it at school
The thing about sending him to the bathroom is that he's still allowed to do it, so maybe it wouldn't get replaced by anything nastier.
I'm not a stop-the-stims kind of person, but I am okay with setting limits. For example, if my son starts running wild in the house, I send him outside to get the sensory input, which he can get on the swings and bicycle without wrecking our furniture.
Sharlet does it all the time. She is a huge verbal stimmer. It doesn't bother me the noise that is but because she still drools it's the spit that bothers me. I just try not to react to it at all and it usually stops after a while. I agree with the replacing stimms with nastier ones, must be careful of that.My youngest son can burp at will, and he learned from youtube to say "this is what a boy can do... <burp>"
At our house, if the farting noises and butt jokes get too much, I tell them that those words/noises belong in the bathroom and send them down there to do it all they want. But usually they just quit. A stim is a little different story, but since this is a new one, you might be able to nip it in the bud?
Good luck with everything.
Well, NM at the Autism conference they talked about a child who blew "raspberries" sort of spitting all the time, so the parents tried to break him of it ...and he started "anal digging"
