Plastic

Here's a link to an article that might of brought this topic up on here :)

http://www.abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3450831&page=1

We used plastic bottles with all the kids once breastfeeding was finished, or with expressed milk.  Sharlet and Nina are still using plastic disposable bottles now I've used plastic bottles on all three of mine.  Same brands..

I think I heard the singer Sheryl Crow talk about this when she was discussing her breast cancer.  She said she learned that when plastic is heated, it emits a chemical into whatever is in the container  For this reason, she will not drink out of a plastic bottle of water if it's been sitting in a hot car.

Both of my kids had plastic bottles and sippy cups after I finished nursing.  Do they even make glass baby bottles anymore?

WIMomOf239314.8615856481I got an email the other day that talked about heating up things in plastic containers in the microwave and how it put chemicals into the food. Nothing is safe anymore. :(
After that email I received one about the bayer company sending meds to other countries because they contained the HIV virus..
I was thinking this morning.. I boiled Williams bottles to clean them when he was a baby and I boiled the water that I made his formula with. I didn't do that with my last two.  Now thats got me thinking.. arg!  lol

With My first daughter (autistic) I used the PLaytex Ventaire Bottles and the PLaytex drop in Liner bottles.

With my Second (NT) I breast fed the first 6 months then used the playtex Ventaire Bottles

FYI - Evenflo still makes glass bottles. I bought some for my newborn after reading about the concerns with the chemicals in plastic.  I really like the glass bottles, they just seem cleaner. I breastfeed so I don't use bottles often, but feel better about them when I do.

From what I remember reading, it's the clear, hard plastic that is the biggest concern. So, most sippy cups etc are ok.

I used plastic with both and used a bottle warmer but i swear they were both on the spectrum in utero, very unusual behavior.Someone just told me that the only thing to worry about with plastics is cancer. Who knows..
I breastfed and also used plastic bottles. I don't know if this is what may have caused my son's issues though.

I believe warming up plastics and food in plastics is harmful to everyone, but moreso to our children. It is possible, IMHO, that for our children only a small degree or amount of toxin may be necessary to trigger their predisposition to certain disorders.

So now we always warm up food in microwaveable glass dishes...try hard to avoid using plastic. We try to remember not to put plastic items in our dishwasher if it's also running through a heat cycle.

There are so many toxins in our environment and some children can tolerate them whereas others cannot.

We are trying to be more careful about other possible chemicals in his daily environment. We try to use natural olive oil soaps in his bath, natural toothpaste, the mildest shampoo we can find, try to avoid using bubble bath, do not light candles or air fresheners in our home, try not to char or burn any part of his food, avoid nonorganic produce, especially root vegetables that absorb more chemicals through the soil, etc..etc..

I don't think one can be too careful nowadays.

I breastfed

Curious of possible autism/plastics connection.  20 yrs ago, I used Evenflo disposable bottles & son became autistic, but daughter did not.  Could you please respond as to whether you used plastic, bottle or breastfed?  Thanks!       I used plastic bottles, but not the disposable ones. my aunt breastfed my cousin until 3. Ya I know way to long and she has apergers. I think it's genetic. It is on my dad's side

I breastfed my children, and they never used bottles.  They eventually used plastic sippy cups, but not for hot drinks.

The study on that ABC news link involved rats, so it is not necessarily true for  humans, especially since the link also mentions other studies that indicate the safety of this type of plastic.

There are a lot of spam e-mails that circulate about the dangers of various things, including plastics.  A great number of them are urban legends.  There is a website devoted to mythbusting these e-mails.  They covered the issue of heating (and freezing plastics).  Here's the link:

Maybe a compromise would be to heat the milk in a non-plastic container, and serve it in the plastic or lined bottle.

Try not to feel guilty about somehow "causing" your child's disability.  No parent would knowingly do this, and the science hasn't come far enough to explain why it happens, although genetics (both family history and spontaneous mutations) look to have the biggest impact.

We used plastic...and still use plastic sippy cups.  Rethinking it all now lol.
