Ikea chair--great for sensory stuff | Autism PDD

Share

Ikea has the best stuff, and you can't beat the price! We have the canvas swing in our basement. It was only 20-30 dollars, and you can't beat that!!!

Wow - and in BOTH my kids' favorite colors! Ds loves blue and my dd loves pink/orange together. The one is more red - but it is close enough! Looks like Santa may be shopping at IKEA this year (since we now live less than an hour from one!).

Thanks for the heads-up!

My son loves this chair at his school. We are going to get one for home as soon as we make a trip to the nearest Ikea. It even has a see-through shade to pull down. It's a great sensory chiar--I'm surprised OT catalogs haven't caught on to it yet.

LOVE Ikea. We have my son's room filled with great stuff from there!

OMG, that chair is great!

We saw it at IKEA last winter and Alex was having a beautiful connection with a little girl in it.  He was playing peek-a-boo with her and that pull-down part and just delighting in her - and I was crying!!!!!

It's a magic chair!!!!!

i have never heard of ikea before

COOL!

Shoot!

Sarah's birthday is this month and I thought it would be cool for her but she is 52 pds.!  We have a new Ikea I havent been yet too because it is packed still with people..very popular! I may see what else they have:)

Oh yeah! I thought it looked familiar! My kids don't care for Daniel Cook - I like it but they don't...

Well, my son is not quite 50 pounds, so I wonder if this would not be a good thing. He's 6 and I wouldn't be there to supervise him all the time if it was in his room. We'd almost have to have it in our living room - which it doesn't quite fit the decor!

Hmmm, Santa will have to think on this one...

You know Daniel Cook is about 7 I think - at least on the TV show I think that's what they said... So maybe it would be okay? We have had this chair for about a year now--it holds up, still looks like new
& gets used ALL the time. Both our girls LOVE it, plus any & every other kid
who visits. All the adults want on in their size too! LOL!

Our OT who came to our house love it too, would incorporate it sometimes
into her SI stuff. We shop IKEA a lot, tons of great stuff there too, cheaper
than therapy catalogs! So much sensory stuff there, plus dh & I love their
furniture too.We had that chair, and Don loved it. However, be warned, it won't stand up
to heavy use or a heavier child. Donny was only about 50lbs back when we
had that, and his regular daily use of it (which included sitting, pulling the
hood up and down, and spinning for a few times around here and there)
broke the spinning mechanism within about 5 months. Also, as the previous
poster mentioned, it's a bit tippy.Shelley--I agree. I want one too just to get away from it all. Wish they came in bigger sizes. We have that chair and it is great!!! My son loves it! One thing you do have to be careful about is when you spin them you need to kind of  be there to hold it steady if it goes too fast so it doesn't tip over. On another board, a grandmother related how it tipped over while her grandson was in it and he broke his arm. We've had no accidents in ours, but I can see how it could happen. It's just one of those things that should always be supervised. jdecina39273.4859143519I love IKEA.  As soon as I get to NY, I'm there.  That's the chair from the "This is Daniel Cook" intro on Disney Channel. Now that you mention it--I do recognize it from Daniel Cook. How funny, I never even thought about it and we see that show all the time. It's pretty big...my 6 yr old is probably 46-48 lbs or so, & she has plenty of
room. My 9 yr old niece gets in it. The chair will hold up, the only issue
may be height. If you can get to IKEA during the weekday and/or go in w/
Sarah have her test out chair (on display in kids area, go up elevator & you
are there), then take her to go eat while dh or someone checks out, you may
be ok. BIG windows in food court, also little kids area w/ cartoons playing &
fun IKEA kids stuff.

My daughter is 5 and a half and she fits in it, that is no problem. You really just want to exercise caution with the tipping issue, especially when they are bigger and heavier. We do love it though, I think my son gets really, really great and needed input from it, so I am not at all trying to discourage anyone, just want to make sure no one gets hurt.

Our OT's office has that chair in the waiting room; my son loves it!!What a timely topic! We went to swim lessons this afternoon and in the outside waiting area - they have this exact chair! The pull-down part is off. Someone told me the chair had been there a year - so I'm guessing the hood either isn't very durable and/or it became a problem for some kids so they took it off. But, my dd loved it! As did every single kid there - including a boy who looked about 10.
