Has anyone tried this? Valerian root is an herbal supplement with the active compound valerinic acid and has similar effects to valium...don't worry, it's not addictive! Some folks feel hyper and a bit nervous the first time around, which is why it's a good idea to start with small doses and work up. It works wonders for me at bedtime, but can also be used in the daytime as an anti-anxiety remedy. My brother with AS gets very nervous around bedtime and takes valerian with Benadryl nightly for allergies and anxiety. My NT friends with anxiety problems love it, too. Again, I stress that it's not addictive and is FAR SAFER than many anti-anxiety drugs. It's worth a shot if you or your child has hyperactivity, anxiety, or sleep problems. There is even some research that suggests that it may help mild OCD behaviors. Talk to your doctor before starting this or any supplement, especially if you/your kid is on other medications.
