Plays in the refrigerator? | Autism PDD

I have THREE fridge-shoppers!

My oldest has weaned herself off it and now bosses the other two, yelling, "Hey! Stop SHOPPING!" when she catches them, heads together, rummaging ...

I've had a problem with B doing this too.  Now Jacob sees him in the fridge, pulls him out and closes it behind him.  Then he tells B, "no no."  One thing I've done is put some of Brendon's favorite things where they are easily found so he gets what he needs and gets out himself.  I keep a pack of pepperoni, thing of chocolate milk, and a few pieces of chocolate near the front so he doesn't rummage through the other things to get to what he wants.

Sam my youngest loves the fridge.  I have had to put a lock on the door to keep him out because he is always in there looking or climbing.  Once in a while he gets stuff out or points to stuff he wants but mostly same thing likes to just see what's there and to play in the cool air.

We also found it necessary to buy a fridge lock.

The best one we found was a very cheap solution that you attached to the side of the fridge and the door.  It clicks locked when you close it or can be set t open for when the babe is asleep.

Any home Lowes should have various-so should babies r us.

Yes, there are eye tests for nonverbal kids.  Ask your pediatrician for a referral, or call the Neonatal Care Unit in your local hospital and ask for one.  Our son was born 3 months early and believe it or not, they can test babies' eyes even then!

This may have nothing to do with vision, but you are smart to rule out problems just in case.

I thought he was doing this at night to see things. . .I have to unsrew all the lights or they would be on all night long. . .He will open up the refrigerator and sit there to look at things. . . .I thought it could be the coolness but he takes things during the day time and opens up the refrigerator to lookat things. . .he is mostly non-verbal I wonder if he is having eye strain or eye problems

our there test for children who do not talk for eye sight?

or maybe it's because I always say ANDY get out of the REFRIGERATOR! My son had a thing for the fridge as well.  Only he would take things out like the eggs, butter and smear them all over anything that got his attention.  I finally had to tie a rope to the door and to the end of my cabnet door to keep him out.  For awhile it was a pain to have to undo this evertime I need something but it proved useful i have to lock the fridge, my son will open it, want nothing, then proceed to take everything out and liine it up.My little Nina is a bugger for opening the fridge.  She does it all the time and plays with the bottles and jars and stuff.  I will have to get something to stop her doing it, because I worry about her breaking something glass, or choking on one of the little sauce bottle lids or something.

Tzoya, she tries to climb in, she is only 11 months old, I have never thought about what you said  Now I'm very scared and will get onto the latch TOMORROW!
I would IMMEDIATELY get a refrigerator lock. Who knows why he wants to do this but you DON'T want him to somehow get into it and close the door on himself in the middle of the night. He'd die before you found him.

Children with developmental delays are considered to be in the high risk category for eye problems.  It's important to get this ruled out, and the child doesn't need to be able to read a chart to accomplish this.

My son had an eye test done at a pediatric eye clinic at age 6.  Since he was verbal but not extremely cooperative or attentive, he did the regular eye charts.  However, he was also given eye drops and tested with a machine called a retinoscopy.

Here is a good article that gives the basics on eye exams for children of various ages.

Here's a list and short description of the eye problems and related behaviors common in autistic children:

Good luck with everything.

Austin loves to go into the fridge every chance he gets..LOL..He is on this kick that he has to grab the mustard..used to grab eggs and break them all.Im so glad hes off that kick for now.Austin also likes to try to climb in the fridge and as of yesterday started grabbing leftovers out of the fridge. I let him taste and then he will leave it alone since he has a  strong  smell sensory.

The only thing I have to keep an eye on is when he leaves the fridge door open. There are days he will close it and some he will leave it open till you shut it.I think all kids go thru this stage. It just takes longer with Austin to get over it..

My son was terrible with opening and closing  the fridge. We ended purchasing fridge locks for our house and both sets of grandparents houses.

We bought ours at Target :)
