Anyone try Low Oxalate Diet? | Autism PDD

Share

Last Christmas, I had my 4 yr old tested for oxalates and yeast as well as casein and he tested high on all..so we have started GFCF and Low Oxalate and the changes are fantastic...My 10 yr old is coming off his stimulants cause I think the oxalates were giving him ADHD and now his focus and hyperactivity are improving daily...my 4 yr old is talking and his hand strength and eye tracking is amazing!!!I found that with all of these diets, I need to make everything myself. I use white rice and coconut flour for my recipes...I make my own bread (white rice and coconut) and then bread all meats with it and they eat that for leftovers as well, brown rice pasta and sausage, organic romaine lettuce for salad with neueman's basalmic vinigrette dressing, peas and corn for veggies, yellow apples, mangos and pears (all peeled) for fruits, corn thins and brown pea butter (JSFoods.us) for a pb alterantive, organic coconut milk form Thai Cuisine, sweets using the above flours and xylitol for sugar (very little - usually 1/3 cup per recipe), Guitless Gourmet corn chips, lettuce burgers. My boys drink mostly water and lemon juice and take cal cirtrate for their cal needs. Chocolate is very high, so maybe white chocolate would work and maybe make your own donuts with this chocolate...are these the only foods, he'll eat...it so, you may want to consider a protein drink...my boys drink Power Meal from Young Living and it really helps with the hunger and it is packed with nutrition without sugar. Nuts are all high but chestnuts are ok if you can find them...

The big discussion on Trying Low Oxalate is yeasty behaviors vs. oxalate issues...it is hard to tell the difference...in fact, we are doing so many great therapies that sometimes it's hard to tell which one is making the changes...for my 4 yr old, increased stimming usually means that yeast is being killed...in the files section once you have access, there are tons of info including improvements that others have experienced while on the diet...

The book "the Low Oxalate Cookbook, Book 2" by the VP Foundation is a fantastic resource...it has recipes and oxalate values for many foods that have been tested...I found mine at Borders, Amazon carries it also.

I hope this helps... Ann, That is great about the diet working. My son is gf/cf/soyfree. Can you let me know some of the things you fix your your kids to eat.  My son loves apples, peanuts, choc almond breeze milk, gf/cf chocolate donuts.. now what can he eat in place of these items. Can they have carob on this diet.. If you have any suggestions on the foods or where I can find add'l info - I would welcome the information.  I am working w/a DAN doctor and this is the way we are going. We will start Difulacon? for the yeast.. but I'm not sure how I will tell what is working the medicine for the yeast or the diet?? What are your thoughts.  Yes, I signed up for the website you mentioned, but I haven't heard back from the moderator..I will try again.. thanks again. Phyllis

I am so glad to see someone interested...my kids too were eating mostly high oxalate foods...when we started in January, I think it took one day for my 10 yr old to show changes in his focus (he had severe ADHD) and my 4 yr old started to climb stairs upright for the first time within a week...every child is different...some take longer to show changes...I've been told that if you go low from the start, the changes are more evident, if you go more slowly, it may take longer to see results, but it is easier on the kids...My 10 yr old had so much frustration when he had medium oxalate foods, so we had to go real low from the start...Now, after 4 months on the diet, the boys have made so many improvements, social, fine and gross motor, strength in their hands, eye tracking, begininning to gain weight for the first time, desire to eat for first time with 4 yr old, receptive language greatly improved in non-verbal 4 yr old, increase in pretend play, yeast improvements (with antigungal therapy it is finally going away), improved BMs and digestion, handwriting ability in 10 yr old...

I belong to a yahoo group that is such a great resource for this diet...

My boys as well are GFCF/Low Oxalate/Low Salicylate, so I understand how hard it can be...let me know if you have anymore questions???
