Cod Liver Oil... question | Autism PDD

Share

the nordic naturals- strawberry flavor liquid, 1/2 teaspoon daily with a meal (usually dinner) ((the dose it says on the website and bottle to give)

it's so strange because i've read and read and read about CLO and no one else seems to have had this effect.

hello everyone!
my son has been on Cod Liver Oil since February and ever since his behavior at school and at home has been getting worse... has anyone ever experienced this?

he's more upset and crying... horrible temper tantrums, not listening... and it's only been about 4 weeks since we started it---

my son is usually the most laid back kid... takes things in stride (for the most part)...

could it be the CLO? this is the only thing i can think of... the only thing that has changed... his schedule is the same, he's sleeping normally... he's eating normally... the only thing different is the CLO.

could it effect him in this way?
Which CLO are you using and how much are you giving him?thank you for getting back to me... a few days after that post, we stopped the fish oil, he has been a happy kid since...

i feel a little wierd about it now... was it (maybe) making him "more aware" of his environment and this is why he was more upset? did his body react like this was an allergy? i'm afraid of the answers really... i hope it was just because he doesn't need it.

but i find it odd that after we stopped, he's back to being a happy kid... wierd!
i could seriously follow the downward trend in his daily school reports... and now his reports are good again, he's happy, following directions, participating again. i guess CLO is not helping my child.

I was thinking of trying it too, but maybe not...... Were about to embark on some intense O.T. sessions and the therapist assured me it might get worse before getting better so I'll just do one thing with him at a time.

Hmm. that is strand I give Ryan the same but 2 table spoons a day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon..not sure why you are having this problem. Could it be something else you recently started?

Hi..

When we started M on "berry keen" he would cry for NO reason.  So I cut the dose back to every other day, for a month and then increased it back to 1/2 tsp a day.  ( this was over a year ago)

He had surgery in Feburary so we did not give it to him for 3 weeks. When we started it back at 1/2 tsp a day, he was crying all the time again. Than I remembered this happening before with the Fish oil and so he is once again at every other day.  I was kicking myself for not remembering this "reaction".  But that is how we "solved" it.  And the only thing different in both cases was the "childern's DHA"  ( it has had three different names since we started using it)

I have never heard of this "reaction" before either.  So I just want to let you know what we did and you are not alone!!

You could try Flaxseed oil

which supplies the "parent" Omega oil which the body breaks down
into the two "daughter" Omega Oils.

Omega 3 :

Alpha Linolenic acid : The "parent" Omega 3

The two "daughter" Omega 3 oils

DHA

EPA
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/eicosapentaenoic-acid-000 301.htm

Fish Oil supplies the DHA and EPA directly while Flaxseed supplies the ALA, and while it is more efficient to supplement Omega 3 with Fish Oil - it can be more of a challenge than flaxseed oil due to the taste, but not always.

I forget the exact % but Omega Oils make up a large % of the brain, more than half.

Studies have clinically proven that supplementing with Fish Oil can significantly improve the behaviour, concentration etc of children with ADHD and while I'm not aware of any studies proving the same with autism - you'll find a lot of testimonies that suggest the same.

Our son really improved with flaxseed but has never really taken to fish oils.

Omega Oils are essential to our diet  and are sometimes classed as Vitamin O, as the body cannot make them itself - which is why supplementation is vital when our children don't get Omega 3 or 6 because they are often picky eaters.

Just a correction to my previous post

Daddy has posted in another thread a link to a clinical study
on Fish Oil and Autism

I guess different kids react differently to CLO. We have been giving Nordic Naturals Children's DHA Strawberry flavored capsules to our 4 y old since Dec of last year and he has been responding to it very well! We first started with 1capsule a day and noticed he was making more eye-contact. Then we increased it to 2 capsules a day and he started to do even better with expressive language and his attention span started to improve. He is not doing ABA or OT yet ( still on waiting list

Although our ped did advise us that some kids might be allergic to the strawberry essence or the soy derivatives that is present...which our ds isn't.

Well, I would try some different CLO first to make sure its not just the brand.  I have had good luck on several brands we have tried.  I have 5 affected kids.  One child is extremely dependent upon the CLO for speech coherancy and mood.  He is a brat and can't concentrate without it.  It has helped all the rest as well.  I did have some increase in behaviors, but it was mixed with improvement in speech and coordination.  After about a month, the results really start to shine.  CLO is normally one of those things that show results after months of use.  I just give my small children 1/2 teaspoon, 10 and up get 1 whole teaspoon.  I use Nordic Naturals.  I have used other brands and Salmon oil as well.  I definitely think one should use only brands from Arctic waters, like Alaska, Norway and Antarticas due to high probability of the fish oil being contaminated with toxins.  I have heard that a few children might not handle the fish oil well.  If my children couldn't handle the fish oil, I would have to replace it with something similar because they really rely on it to improve ADHD type symptoms.   I was just at the DAN conference.  Something interesting that I learned during Jim Adam's discussion about EFAs is that if a child is hyper after you give them EFA, they may have low carnitine levels.  This is something you ought to get tested or even try to supplement to see if he gets better after taking the CLO.I was reading what you said about cod liver oil. Can you tell me more about how it affects autism. I was giving my son cod liver oil too and now that you mentioned it I noticed that he was a little more irritable than usual.
