I think it is probably a combination of things causing the tantrum. The albuterol causes you to feel jittery. Sensory overload from blowing cool mist directly into her face and the taste it leaves in your mouth is HORRID no matter what you do. I tried salt water rinses and I still couldn't get rid of that nasty taste!I give Andrew the albuterol serum, he has breathing issues from sickness quite often. I don't know how that differs from the inhaler, if at all. I have taken it a couple times myself, (the serum) when we had a bad case of bronchitis and i didn't notice the jitteriness or rush. Maybe the serum cuts down on that since you aren't getting it in your system so fast? No idea though really. Maybe the serum wouldn't be as much of a rush as the inhaler? Probably something to talk to the dr about.
Thanks for all the replies..She has 2 more doses today and only one left tomorrow.. I think the "whole mask mist in my face" sensory thing was a big part of it too. Next time I will request the liq. albuterol..I know now she will never do the inhaler or aerochamber..she hates the anything in her mouth including suckers

I LOVE your quote~stole it~ and printed it with Sarah's pic below and placed on fridge:))

I have used albuterol for like 4 years and even have my own nebulizer at home for the boys because they spend the entire winter in the croupy crap stage. Alot of it is the fact the nebulizer blows steam that is cold and they hate that. If it is something that really is causing her to tantrum that bad I would suggest asking for an inhaler with an arochamber. They only have to breath into the chamber like 5 times verses 10 minutes on the nebulizer. Also with the arochamber you get most of the meds into the lungs to open up the passages with the neb if she is fighting you are not having quite the same effect.
We've done albuterol for C. Dr. said straight out that it tends to make kids hyper. No increased tantrums but he was boucing off the walls. This last time he needed it we did the inhaler with aerochamber. Huge fuss at first be he adjusted after a few days. It's much easier than the nebulizer treatments, plus it's portable!I have a nebulizer for both of my children and myself. And I can tell you I always dread the long nights ahead after giving a breathing treatment with Albuterol. It does give you a rush and your heart feels like it is going to pound out of your chest. And my kids havn't really gotten that aggressive, but it would not shock me if they did because I know the effects.DITO to amie's suggestion. Tweeker has asthma and uses both flovent & albuteral. The aerochamber seems to "do the trick" to help him breathe more easily AND I noticed that he seemed less anxious/hyper when we use the aerochamber. The nebulizer caused him to "bounce off the walls".
Shelley, I am sooo sorry to hear that Sarah bit you!!!! Hope you're Ok.
Thank goodness she got her last one today:) I started her back on Zyrtec a few days ago and she has been sleeping in till 11:00 every morning and eating all day long..constantly hungry. I looked it up and saw that this was a side effect so I am going to have to find another allergy med..claretin didn't work well..I am thinking benydrl at evening..I have to call doc to see if it is okay. Thanks for so many replies~She is much better!! We went to park today and fed the ducks:) Today was probably one of the best days she has had in over 6 weeks:) Enjoy while it last:))
Blessings,
From my understanding albuteral is a form of stimulant. Stimulants are known for causing aggression. I am not suprised to hear that kids have more tantrums when using it. My children nor I have ever needed albuteral or anything like it but I have friends that use it regularly and you can tell.
YES! Payne was at the ER for something else and he had a cold/allergies and they gave us that to break it up in his chest. IMMEDIATELY irritated and easy to set off.I use an Albuterol rescue inhaler as needed because I have asthma. I can tell you that when I do use it, you feel this immediate rush of adreneline and I feel shaky and jittery for abit. So I am a grown adult I can only imagine how their little bodies feel when they get that immediate rush. I don't want you to think it's your child, it is them reacting to a rush of the Albuterol. Don't know if this helps but as soon as you described your child I understood.
My daughter has asthma and used albuteral. She is NT and it made her very jittery and shakey. She would always complain about feeling funny and would snap at us wich is totally out of character for her. She is almost 10.
Her Dr. switched her to xopenex and it is much better for her.
We actually owned a nebulizer because Connor's asthma was so bad between the ages of 2-5. The Albuterol made him speedy, but I can't ever recall an increase in tantrums from it.Thanks for the replies everyone:)
I just got back from doc and she is cutting her neb. tx to 3 times today then 2 tomorrow and then one...zero:) She has never shown aggression before but tantrums are nothing new:) I knew about the rapid pulse and speed effects..she was kinda all over the place! I also take Albuterol and use it and other meds on my nebulizer for severe asthma. As another mentioned, it causes irritability, a feeling of shakiness, racing mind sometimes, dizziness, and other possible symptoms. I can see where the medication may ellicit a tantrum in a child on the spectrum. Best of luck to you!Can your Dr. prescribe another med? We use xopenex with no real lasting
effects. My close friend says it makes her son a little hyper, but no behavior
issues. My son had a nebulizer and used Abutrol in it when he was small. I sorry I can't remember any aggression. I do remember him shaking from it.
Hello:)
I just wanted to know if anyone has given their child neb. breathing treatments using Albuterol? Sarah had to go to ER last friday night for horrible croupy cough and ordered to have albuterol breathing tx every 4 hours...I noticed right afterwards she would start to tantrum...so much so that yesterday as I was doing my best to ignore "the tantrum" she bent over and bit my arm really hard!
She has never ever bitten me or herself! I feel the Albuterol made her more inclined to do this but wanted an opinion. I sent her to her room right away and told her she hurt me..she said she was sorry but it took a longggggggggg time? I am taking her back for a follow up this morning to see if we can stop them...just FYI to let you know how she reacted to this stuff.. at least I hope it is just the Albuterol.. and not a sign of things to come
