crossing eyes | Autism PDD

Wow my son is doing this as he plays and focuses on playing xbox games. I've decided to take him to a eye doctor. i think it causes alot of eye-strain.... Does anyone else have a child that stims and crosses eyes at the same time.  My son has been doing this for the last year when he is stimming.  Actually it is just one eye.  I keep meaning to mention it to the doctor in case it's a weakness in his eyes and I always forget when we are there.  I only notice it when he is stimming though.  Like yesterday he was outside with my nine year old and she had a loud radio that he was stimming to.  Hand flapping, body tightening on tip toes and eye crossing.  Sometimes I notice him doing it at the computer, but he is still always stimming when he does it.  He is four years old.  I just wonder if this is part of his stim or if I need to bring it to the attention of a doctor.I don't know if it is just from stimming or what but I would definately let the doctor know so he can make the decision if it is a problem or not.  Good Luck!

I would definately ask the doctor if it is strabismus or not.  If it is, then it can be corrected by wearing glasses.

Yes, my ds has been doing it for over a year now.  We saw a Ped Opthamologist and he saw my ds stimming and crossing his eyes.  According to the Dr. it intensifies the stimming, before the age of 7/8 they can focus their eyes while they are crossed.  We were told it will do no long term harm, and he will grow out of it.

Having said that when my ds was first diagnosed we were given a consult to a pediatric opthamologist as children with neurological problems should always be screened for eye irregularities, as well as have a hearing test.  My ds has been a couple of times now, and his eyes are okay.

Hope that helps.

I will, of course mention it to the doctor, but you know it's one of those things th out of the million others that needs to be addressed  with the doctor.  I just wondered though if this is a common thing with stimming.

Tony does not have much in the way of "obvious" stims, but I will say for the last year or so he crosses his eyes a lot.  He is 12 and going through a "goofy" phase... everything has to be funny.  And the more "goofy" he is acting, the more likely he is crossing his eyes as well.
