Does anyone use enzymes instead of/or with the GFCF diet?

kateyp

Yes, we use digestive enzymes with both kids who are on the gfcf diet.  The enzymes are great because they help the body completely digest food.  If a child suffers from malabsorption/ leaky gut,  the digestive enzymes help heal the gut and help the body absorb more nutrients in the food.  If a child has yeast overgrowth, the enzymes help break down the outer shell of they yeast so that the probiotics and/or antifungal can easily penetrate and destroy the yeast.  Also, certain digestive enzymes can completely break down gluten and casien to prevent that 'morphine' like effect a child can suffer from when the undigested protiens pass the gut into the blood stream.  Oh, and people do use the enzyme DPP-IV instead of the gfcf diet (Houston Nurtracueticals sells one that we use when we allow the kids to have infractions - ie eating out in a restaurant)

My 2 boys take enzymes...they work great...but I agree about seeing a dr first cause not all kids are alike

Hey,

I'm also new to this site and have been bouncing around from subject to subject.  This information is so great.  I use to think we were alone, but now I know better.

We are also beginning the GF diet - I am fascinated by all the success stories I have been reading.  I don't understand why we had to "stumble" upon this diet in lieu of our Dr. or Therapists recommending it.  We are also going to see a DAN Dr.  - not cheap, and not covered by insurance.

My son too also struggles from being over weight.  He is only 11 and weighs 145 pounds (he was always such a lean kid).  His weight gain started when he began Risperdall as well.  We took him off of that and now we use Seroquel.  The weight gain is still there and it blows my mind because we watch what he eats and we pack his lunch everyday for school.  We are having blood work done to make sure it's not Thyroid.  He is not very active.  Doing anything physical is like torture to him - he complains so much about being active outdoors.  We've been bike riding, and I bribe him to wak with me a couple times a week.

When you guys say Doctor do you mean to say DAN doctor or regular Ped ?

My Ped is completely clueless about ASD and  kept telling us to "wait and see"

I would not even ask her about the CF GF diet- I did tell her that we were staring it - though it was not a huge change for us as our diet is very rice, meat, vgetables and beans anywayand ROhan loves Soy yogurt

So our big change was not being able to eat out - I dont know if any doctor would object to our removing chicken nuggets and Aunt Annie's Pretzels with Cinnamom and Sugar

I give our 3 yr old about 5 per day, with her meals. I break open the capsuel and mix it in babyfood or applesauce.
