hyperlexia - aspies | Autism PDD

what's the difference? - just wondering...

My son had hyperlexia and has PDD-NOS. It's common although not THAT common in ASD.But what s the difference between hyperlexia and aspergers? - sorry for not bing clear on that...I didn't know anyone but ASD kids had hyperlexia. I'm not sure if it's part of the syndrome or a diagnosis of itself. never heard of a NT kid just picking up a book and reading by rote. Sorry, can't help more.

Hyperlexia is a super ability for reading.  It is possible to have this without an ASD.

Asperger's is an ASD.  People with Asperger's do not necessarily have hyperlexia.

I hope that helps.

Hyperlexia is as mentioned above.   Aspergers is a disorder on the Autism spectrum. Basically, Hyperlexia is a symptom, Aspergers is a disorder. You can have the "symptom" of Hyperlexia and be HFA, ASPERGERS, PDD, OR SEVERLY AUTISTIC. You can have Aspergers and not have Hyperlexia. My oldest has what I now suspect to be Aspergers, he is 12, although he was diagnosed as ADHD at age 6. He does not and never did have hyperlexia. In fact he has to take additional reading classes at age 7 and I had to work with him at home and teach him phonics because he couldn't read properly. Even though he had an above age vocabulary and was an early talker. My youngest who is still struggling with speech has IMO hyperlexia. Even though he can't yet tell us what he is reading, he has more of an interest in books without pictures and whenever he wants to watch a dvd he immediately flips it over to the back and "reads" it to see if this is the one he wants to watch. He also knows all of his alphabet and numbers.  BUMPMy daughter has Aspergers and Hyperlexia.

Thanks everyone.

I met a lil kid who appeared to be on the spectrum but with a very rich vocabulary. His dad said he had hyperlexia - I thought perhaps that was just another name for aspergers or was another disorder, similar to aspergers.

I get it it now.

Wow, that was a great response and VERY informative Darkwing Duck! I will have to look more at those links. My son is 5 1/2, diagnosed with PDD-NOS but does not appear to have hyperlexia. He could identify all numbers and letters by age 2, but is not reading yet. He knows what sounds all the letters make and is JUST starting to sound out words. We held him out of kindergarten a year, so it is not a tremendous focus as of yet.

I apparently read at age 3, but since I comprehended what I read - in my understanding that is not hyperlexia.

About the man who said his son was hyperlexic because his son had such a rich vocabulary - I'm not sure that one has to do with the other - at least not a lot. Yes, if you read a lot you generally have a richer vocabulary - but kids with hyperlexia are not fully comprehending what they read. So, it would be difficult for them to use their rich vocabulary appropriately. Maybe I'm not understanding the definition of hyperlexia so I'd better go look at those links!

Well the kid seemed pretty asd. I just commented to the dad that his kid had a rich vocabulary (waiting room conversation starter) and he mumbled 'hyperlexia' (conversation stopper

Interesting post Ducky! Thanks for that.
