Making themselves gag

ditto to foxl, when i would address it "jason, don't do that, your gonna get sick" he would giggle, do it more until he threw up..

he still does it, i act like it is not happening and it diminishes it!!

ignoring is SO hard!!!

My 4 yo does this (PDD).  She sticks her entire hand in her mouth.

Wow my son has been doing this for the past 5 or so days!  He hasnt vomited but its similar. He has put his finger down his mouth and gagged on purpose and he does this when i put him in time out i think its an attention getter or doing it on purpose when hes upset.

Another thing he has been doing which i was just going to post about is all thuout the day is making a noise like he is choking on something and it sounds like hes dying and seriously in trouble and i rush to him and he stops and i tell him to stop and he says he wants to do it. His face look like he is serioiusly choking on something he does the whole motions and everything! I dont know why hes doing this but i hate it cuz my heart stops and people around him freak out and think hes choking but hes not hes doing this on purpose. He seems to like doing it.

143hayden40071.4483449074My son does that sometimes, especially when he is upset.  He is two and I usually take his hand out of his mouth and tell him NO!!  But my NT son use to put his hand in his mouth all of the time around that age as well but not really to make himself gag, although that would sometimes be the consequence.  My NT stopped and I hope that also happens with my ASD child.
OH, if he is doing it in TIMEOUT, definitely ignore.  And if he ever does vomit, calmly hand him the paper towels to clean it up!

can't help addressing it, GRRRRR, i feel like my head is going to explode sometimes from ignoring!!!!!!!!!!

everytime i give it attn, i soon realize it was the wrong thing to do.

I have been ignoring the gagging tho sometimes i cant help but to tell him to stop ive realized he is just doing it for attention or 'ill show you...' sort of thing. One thigns for sure i def will be making him clean up the mess lol THanks!

A piece of advice from T's excellent clinical SLP ... "make your reaction to negative behaviors as BORING as possible."  No emotional content.

If he does it in the car, pull over or exit and stop the car until he stops.  Without saying a word.

Or silently and without expression or eye contact, direct him to timeout, at home.

(clearly easier said than done but it WORKS and that makes it easier, with each success).

foxl40073.3346643519As difficult as it is, what made it go away was IGNORING it.

Hey board,

For the past few days, and I don't know if it had to do with my son being congested with a cold or not, but he's been gagging himself by putting his finger down his throat.  Twice he threw up from this.  Also, he had an ear infection so I had to use a syringe to give the medecine down his throat.  I'm also wondering if he liked that feeling so he was trying to get that by gagging himself.  Who knows but whatever the reason,  I don't want this to continue.

Did anyone ever experience this?  If so, what helped this to go away?  His ABA therapist said to just keep an eye on it the best I can and re-direct him when he does it.
yuck i hate gaging .my frioend baby sat a kid that did that .an what she was told to do was everytime he stuck his hands in his mouth he had to go wash them .also maybe if you make him help clean up the mess he made from gaging himself .it wont be a pleasnt expernice an it will stop.  when i baby sat sometime my newphew did this explsy when i had to give him his meds if he was sick .he would on poupours make himselkf vommint it back up .so i say if you do it agin after i do your meds then you will need to stay in bed all day becuse if your vomminting then your tyo sick to stay up an have fun .it stop him I can tell you that my son with ASD did this around age of 3, I got so tired of it.  But it is a perfectly normal thing for a 1 year - 1 1/2 year old kid to do.  What age is your child developmentally?  My 2 NT kids both went through a phase where they did this right around 12-18 months.   Andrew did this, and still does when he is sick. I think it has to do with the thick saliva you get when you're sick, he's trying to get rid of it. I would give him a decongestion appropriate for his age. I constantly was pulling fingers out of his mouth. When they were younger, both boys did this all the time. It was oral sensory seeking. If you have an OT talk to them about it, they will put him on a sensory diet, but my guess is if he didn't do it before then it will stop when he gets over the cold. Andrew now only does it when he is sick. He is 6. But if it is a constant problem I think the OT will be a better help than the ABA therapist, cause it is sensory.
