Coughing on ppl?

Oooo....my 17yo does this, too, and I HATE it.  He coughs or sneezes on someone specifically to get attention.  How we deal with this would differ from how you would deal with it for your child given that my son is so much older and is verbal, but it is a behavioral problem and should respond to a good behavior intervention plan.  Good luck.

Has anyone sucessfully taught a child who's nonverbal to cover their mouth when they cough.   Did you use a PECS or hand over hand when you could?  Was it addressed by ABA?

I don't always know when dd will cough like today she coughed about 6 times in 12 hours...  a young lad was letting her watch him play his Nintnedo DS until she sprayed him with cough germs...  it's a way bigger obstacle than hand-flapping.

Here are some social stories about coughing, if anyone needs them.  Otherwise, if your child is capable of imitation, I'd practice covering pretend coughs.

Our MD's office recommends coughing into the crook of the elbow -- that way germs are not on the hands!

My NT's have a tough time learning basic hygiene -- and they reinforce each other.   But the novelty of "elbow" seemed to help, too!

Thanks! for links and commiseration .   And, the elbow approach is definitely something to consider.

I'm reviving this old topic because I ran across an online video about it.  The video is actually part of a product package called Germy Wormy, where you get a DVD, parent/teacher materials and sleeve protectors with a worm on them to remind your child to cough and sneeze into their elbow.  But I think the video clip can be used on its own (particularly if you buy a worm/caterpillar sticker and stick it on your child's elbow).

We've been trying FOREVER to correct this..........no matter what we do, he seems to not understand....good luck.

At my sons school they have posters that show how to cover your cough, using the elbow method. They actually had a presentation on this and a class lesson, it is reinforced everyday in the classroom and around school by all the staff. They even taught him to sing the alphabet song while washing hands in kinder, and the school nurse gets a kick out of hearing him do it when he goes to her office to use the bathroom everyday...

I know the special day class at his school has a PECS diagram for how to cover your cough, it's pretty cool the way they did it....

My little guy has bronchitis right now and he is doing such a good job remembering to cover when he coughs, everytime I see him do it I praise him, I'm really impressed with how well they worked on it at school...Good luck, I hope you find the answer your looking for...

I'm bumping this topic since it might be of interest due to the swine flu.
