| Has anyone heard that dyslexia, ADD, ADHD are on the spectrum? I have heard about the possibility of ADHD/ADD on the spectrum---but what about dyslexia? I have heard all of the above AND Bi-polar disorder. Not sure if this means these disorders are all on the spectrum or are all related in the way the brain is wired?Yes Holly, My son has broad Language learning Disibilities, more complex than dyslexia, but dyslexia could not be ruled out, he also is an aspie. Left side of brain does not connect with right side of body either. (hard wiring)
Kids on the autism spectrum can have any number of other challenges. Autism does not immunize them against other things. For example, my son is both PDD-NOS and Hearing Impaired. Anyone's child can be ASD and dyslexic. My mother is clearly dyslexic and has some difficulty understanding what she reads, but otherwise has no sign of being on the spectrum - she has never met a stranger I don't think Holly's question is whether autistic people can also have ADD, etc. It's whether those disorders are considered part of the Autism Spectrum. I have seen graphs where dyslexia, ADD and ADHD are all on The Autism Spectrum. Just another reason why the autism rate is "increasing." More and more disorders are being put in with the autism (which is really the Autism Spectrum) statistics. Autism used to be just counted as those who were very extremely affected. I have heard the 1 in 166 number is including add and adhd this what it said on the CAN site I was like huh? No.. That is a figure from the Centers for Disease Control and it counts only those who have been officially diagnosed under the Pervasive Developmental Disorders section of the DSM-IV. The dx's counted are Autism, Pdd-nos, Asperger's, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Rett's. Of course, it's been relatively recently that Asperger's and PDD-NOS have been defined, specifically, in this category and that DOES add to the kids who qualify for the 1 in 166 stat. However, kids with SOLELY ADD/ADHD are not part of the stat.OK---- My question was.....in different words..... Are these disorders "related" on the spectrum? Maybe you'll understand more if I elaborate. My son is ASD, bipolar, anxiety. My 10y is anxiety, depression, dyslexia and will probably be dx bipolar on Friday. My 11yo--so far--only panic attacks and mild anxiety, difficulty with new things, etc (middle school started this year and she's having a hard time with new things and transitioning). We have zero genetics for ASD. But....we do have anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, distant relatives (dh's uncle and cousin) with bipolar, ADD, ADHD. So if we have no genetics for ASD----do all these disorders sort of come from the same brain area and my son just got the worst of them---all mixed together? Get it?????? I have heard that if you have these disorders on both sides of the family it is the perfect storm and genetically you have a predispositon to ASD that other families dont I have aaaaaaallllll kinds of this stuff scattered through our families-in hind sight I should have had my suiters fill out a familly mental health questionaire I heard this from the developmental ped at MIND and read it in some books Are you asking if there is a possibility that your 10 year old and 11 year old who have dx of things such as depression, anxiety, learning disability, dyslexia, etc, could they also have ASD and just not have that DX yet? I might be totally missing the ball park here. But if that is what you are asking, it is very possible that your 10 and 11 year old could have ASD, even if there are no prior genetic predispositions. From what i understand all the things that your 10 and 11 year old have been DX with are fairly typical comorbid DX with ASD. Does that make sense? If you are questioning rather or not you should have the 10 year old and 11 year old looked at for ASD, I think you should if you feel like that might be what's going on. Just because you don't have a family history of ASD doesn't mean that your son's issues or "worse" than the others and that is why he has ASD. If he has that DX, he just simply has ASD and all the cormorbid DX to go along with it. O.K., here's how I understand it. ASD, ADD, ADHD, Bi-Polar, and OCD all fall under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders. If you think of line, classic autism starts at the left side, and it moves to the right with moderate to mild autism, pdd-nos and lastly aspergers (although there's disagreement as to the order of pdd-nos and aspergers). This is where ASD stops and the other disorders kick in. So, yes, they are all considered related in the sense that they fall under the Pervasive Develomental Disorder umbrella and can co-exist with one another. However, ASD only envelopes autism, pdd-nos and aspergers. It's not unusual for co-morbidity to exist amongst all these disorders.I guess I'm wondering how my kids could get these disorders if they all are different. They all have the anxiety aspect. And 2 will possibly be bipolar. One dyslexia. My asd son is so far not dyslexia. So when you mix this stuff together from each side of the family----you can get anything!!! But I assume that these are all related. I just found out tonight that eating disorders can be a bipolar symptom. My sister had anorexia about 35y ago. But she is not dx bipolar by any means. She does have anxiety though. My son's first dx was "mixed developmental disorder" at 3.5yo. Anyone know what on earth that means???? I assumed it was because he had all these symptoms of everything and they couldn't put their figure on just one disorder. It appears the most common genetic trait in your is anxiety and from there its lead to other possible dxs. Have you been to a geneticist? This might be helpful on finding out about the gene pool of your husband and self. I hope this info, helps....I heard that Rett syndrome was recently removed from the DSM-IV. At least thats what the autism consultant at Sharlets school said anyways
The DSM-IV has not yet been rewritten into the DSM-V but I hear that's coming. I hear that both Rett's and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder are going to be removed and placed in their own category. I have no idea what else will be changed, if anything, and I don't know when the DSM-IV will be changed into the DSM-V. But you're right that this is coming. Another post going up to take care of that troll.will have to bump this again. and again bump |
