Hello,
My name is Dai. I am cunrrently attending San Francisco State University getting my BA degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising. In our Product Development class, we are responsiable for coming up with and design a line of clothing.
My group and I decided upon the idea of incorporating weight resistance into clothing for children with sensory needs. Our idea is to add weight to regular clothing (ex. sweatshirt, pants, t-shirt, scarf..etc) in order for children to meet their sensory needs. The weight will be hidden in the shoulders and lap.
As part of class, we need to do market research and figure out more about our target market. There are some questions we would like to ask to get a general feel of what's needed and would be helpful for children.

1. What's your relationship to a child or children with sensory needs? mother, therapist etc..

2. What's your child/children age?

3. Where do you buy sensory products for your child/children? Catalog, Internet,  and or a store? Which one? and describe the best clothing style that meet the sensory needs for your child/children.

4. Would you/your child be interested in clothing that helps meet their sensory needs?

5. Where would you most like to find clothing like ours? Catalog, Internet, and a store? Where would be a good location for a store?

6. What suggestions are you willing to share with us regarding our design ideas for these products? ex. fabrics, colors, sizes, prices...etc.

we really need your helps and thanks for your time.

Hi, Dai!  What a great project!  My son is 10 and does not need weighted clothing, but some suggestions would be small to medium sizes would be most popular, as in size 2Toddler through size 7 child.  That would cover ages 1 through 7 approximately. Because children in this age range grow soooo quickly, a synthetic blend stretchable fabric would be ideal so that the parent can get more use out of it.  Maybe with a band of fabric around the wrists or ankles so that the arm and leg length could be adjusted (cuff up for shorter length, then roll down when the child grows an inch or two).  Definitely a material/weights that is easy to wash and dry, a material that doesn't fade with frequent washings, durable.   As for selling the merchandise,  catalogs by mail order, stores like Babies R US, The Childrens Place, Gap for Kids. etc.   Good luck!!I currently do not buy these products, but have been looking into it very recently as my son tends to weigh himself down with objects (and small people) voluntarily.  He puts heavy things in his backpack just for the weight and wears it around the house, puts books and toys in his pants pockets or under his shirt and then tucks it in, wants his little brother to sit on him like he's a bench! lol

3. Where do you buy sensory products for your child/children? Catalog, Internet,  and or a store? Which one? and describe the best clothing style that meet the sensory needs for your child/children.

I have only found these products available on the internet, which presents a bit of a problem.  I hate the idea of buying before trying, and having to return a product through the mail if it doesn't work out.  I have also cringed at the appearance of most of the available clothing.  None of it looks like regular kids' clothing.  Even if it's just for around the house, my son does have clothing preferences and is not going to want to wear a dorky looking nylon vest with big velcro straps and clearly stitched pockets.

As far as general style goes, the clothing should look as similar to regular children's wear as possible, and available in a number of styles.  The weighted pockets or sections should be concealed on the inside of the garment or camoflauged in the design (cargo style pants with weighted areas beneath or as a part of decorative pockets, in the elbow reinforcement patches of a rugby shirt, in the front pocket of a hooded sweatshirt, etc.).

As a more technical consideration of design, offer custom weight placement and amount.

4. Would you/your child be interested in clothing that helps meet their sensory needs?

Yes.  I'm currently looking for something to try out.  It may help, it may not...

5. Where would you most like to find clothing like ours? Catalog, Internet, and a store? Where would be a good location for a store?

A store!  As far as location goes, definitely in a major city.  Potentially such a store could be opened in the small shopping concourses sometimes found in children's hospitals.  You could sell other sensory/OT items, as well.

6. What suggestions are you willing to share with us regarding our design ideas for these products? ex. fabrics, colors, sizes, prices...etc.

I've gone over some of this already.  Fabrics should vary.  There is no way you're going to get a kid who hates anything too textured touching him to wear waffled or ribbed cotton (*points at her son*).  And hey, these kids are still just kids.  You couldn't pay my son to wear purple or pink, and he's not a big fan of yellow.  Vary colour, fabric and size, just as you would with any clothing for kids.  As for price, production and overhead costs must be considered, but don't get greedy on profit.  Kids are expensive enough as it is...
thanks everyone, I am really appreciated your information.
Me and my group will get together tomorrow, and I will share those information with them.
Thanks again. :)

Dai
