Does Whey and Gluten cause Autism? I heard that mercury vaccines maybe the cause.Nobody knows the cause of autism, There was speculation about mercury being a possible trigger, this has pretty much been disproven (the scientists say). Science HAS proven that genetics play a part in causing at least some children to be predisposed to autism but enviromental, immunology and perhaps other factors have not been ruled out as possibilities. There is no proven theory except genetics at this time. As far as Whey and gluten I have never heard of this being a possible cause however some people find that these things impair their autistic childs functioning when they are exposed to them. Some people do choose to remove these things from the diet and do see marked improvements. Hope that answered a little for you. If gluten intolerance causes autistic like behaviors in a child and the child recovers dramatically when a gluten-free diet is introduced, then the child doesn't have autism...the child has an allergic reaction/ intolderance to gluten or may have a leaky gut which can contribute to the problem. However, if a child does have ASD and has gastrointestinal problems, there is a good chance that the child may suffer from leaky gut syndrome (tiny holes in the gut that allow food particles to pass from teh gut into the blood stream. The child can have a negative reaction to the food particles entering the blood stream and can make their ASD behaviors or sensory issues worse. The theory behind the gluten (wheat protien) and casien (milk protien) is that the body is not completely digesting those protiens. Those protiens can become a natural type of morhine like substance. When it enters the bloodstream, it can have a negative effect on the body. Some say that it can pass the blood-brain barrier and negatively affect the brain causing the ASD kids to have a 'high' and be disconnected from the ennvironment. A child can have a very high tolerance to pain, may seem like they are in a fog and may have a more difficult time communicating or responding. Here are some links w/ good info: http://members.aol.com/lisas156/gfpak.htm [QUOTE=Allegra]Nobody knows the cause of autism, There was speculation about Science that is funded by the CDC says that! Check out the study that the EWG reported on in Dec 2004 -http://www.ewg.org/reports/autism/execsumm.php The EWG report is the BEST one done by far and if you have a child with ASD it will explain a lot to you about the mercury and the diets. (I have identical twins that have ASD) And also read EVIDENCE OF HARM - by David Kirby KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!
some children on the spectrum respond to removal of major proteins such as dairy, wheat, because there body lacks the enzyme, or it does not properly work, that breaks it down into amino acids the body can use. when this happens they dont get the nutrients, and it goes right to the blood stream like an opiate. it works with my son, and if he gets it he gets diahrrea, and it affects sleep, behavior, aggression and self injury, stimming, and sensory. the cause of autism is unknown! also, my son is 22mos old, is vaccinated, and non contain the thermisol which they once thought caused it. but im not saying it doesnt! it very well might and my son may have it for a different reason. i think just like the illness being a continum or spectrum, i believe the causes may be the same. my uncle has aspergers, my son had birth complications and was possibly deprived of oxygen, so who knows. I have my son on the GF/CF diet. He's truly allergic to the casein, so he wasn't on it to begin with. We didn't follow the diet to an absolute T, but we did take out wheat totally. And by not following it to a T, I mean I still let him play with playdough (has gluten) and still has soy (not entirely sure if that's a no no), but he was doing fantastic. I really noticed a huge difference within a few weeks. He was repeating words. Most of the time, they weren'tt annunciated correctly, but he'd always try. His behavior was less "foglike". He seemed to really be progressing. UNTIL after about three months on the diet, my husband gave him fish coated in wheat. Well, I figured after he had it he seemed fine, so we decided to give him more, and then more and then more. Well, after two days back on the wheat, he totally regressed. I swear! He wasn't talking as much, nor as clear. He seemed to be a total fog, just not with it. Even his ABA therapists were commenting on his behavior. Needless to say, we put him back on the diet, and he bounced back after about five days. you're not alone. my son can't have any dairy...allergy also. hes been on the diet 4 mos. i purposely gave him dairy, then wheat when he got back to normal, oats, etc so i could see what the infractions did. these foods effect my son everywhere from mood, stims, words, sleep, behaviors, and GI. hes by no means cured but more than 50% better. unfortunately its been hurting me on a dx on his good days. he gets soy because hes still on soy formula. soy is only a bad thing if it hurts them. he does well with it. he occasionally gets wheat if hes not eating anything else, but he usually wont touch it anyway. once i had him off those foods, even at 20mo old he wont touch most of them. i also do a modified fiengold diet. i dont give him any dyes or perservatives from crude oil such as vanillin (in alotta candy bars, etc.) or the tbhq etc. they even use them to perserve freshness in rice krispies-they coat the bag init! he gets minute amounts of high fructose corn syrup on an extemely rare basis. hows yours do with bread? also, if you havent seen it, i should recommend namaste brand foods. they are new and awesome! they have spice cake, vanilla cake, choc cake, cookie, and pizza crust mixes. I was under the impression that this was an "all in" kind of diet? Your posts sound as though you can flip back and forth with behaviors from these foods in a matter of days? The information I had gathered also indicated that this wasn't a cheat sometimes kind of diet.............you do it or you don't. Even tiny cheat will nullify any thing you have done to that point and that it can take months up to a year to really see the results?the infractions werer because i needed to redocument the reactions for the gi. and card. dairy takes 8 days to remove from the system, gluten can be up to a year. my son never had much gluten because he wont eat bread, crackers, waffles etc. there are times he will get a scant of wheat but almost never. with a 20mo old with sid and oral motor dysfunction the main thing is he has to eat-period. soy goes both ways. some will say go for it, some say no becuase it breaks down like caesin---but some children test intolerant to it (some dont) aside from that, yes my son is all in. some affects are seen in a few days even with gluten and please keep in mind, this diet doesnt work for everyone. it does well with children with food intolerances howeveer, and my son has many. it also runs in the family. My son is totally "all-in" now. Now that I've seen what the wheat/gluten does to him. I just figured we'd give it to him and see if we see a difference. Well, we did in a few days, and the results were not pleasant as I mentioned earlier. I was very skeptical of the diet to begin with, but am completely sold now. We have had our dd on the GF/CF diet for about a week. We took out all dairy about a month ago and just finished weeding out all the gluten. From what I understand it was designed to be a "no exceptions" diet but I've heard it depends on the severity of the allergy. My dd has only been gluten free for a week, and I don't know if it is diet related or not, but she went up to her cousins and gave them each a hug the other day. She has NEVER approached another child before. All of her other behaviors are the same--nothing else has changed, but it was so unbelievable. I'm still in shock. I will definitely be sticking to this diet for a while to see if anything else changes to determine whether its the allergy or non-allergy induced autism. well, a reaction like that isnt unusual and i am sooooooo happy for you. i learned that feeling after gfcf too. i do know the diet is supposed to be 100% and a doctor at the online aut conference explained it very well. withdrawl, residuals basically. but with a young toddler with oral motor dysfuntion and apraxia u do what u can to keep him thriving. i figure being 95% is better than 0% and diahrrea is almost non existent now. one thing is i dont know if autism is allergy induced??? not every child is as lucky and shows improvemnt with the diet and the ones who do at times only have intolerances becuase they cant break down the proteins as opposed to an allergy that has the body attact itself. also, this diet is by all means not a cure all (and any one who has had it cure all is a rare miracle) it just helps. while they may one day find that the two are linked autism is just that. a food allergy wont cause or cure it-however it may lessen symptoms and that is all any of us can hope for. im soo glad to hear your childs progress. Just trying to bump the post |
