Alcoholism is minor degree of Autism

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic
although my posts are not necessarily approriate under this forum, I've chosen it due to the extreme need to educate others.
I spent 19 years in AA.  In the last 4 months, not only have I gone from a position of 'no way out of here' to a semi-functioning normie, but I've made some unbelievable discoveries.
I could not believe the similarities of symptoms between autism and alcoholism, especially in the more advanced stages.
Wheat has 3 cousins: rice, rye and barley.  Beer is malted with yeast from barley.  Wheat is an autism allergen and barley is an alcoholics allergen.  Yeast is a common factor.  Along with, one of my severe allergens is egg white, beer is clarified with egg white leaving behind the egg proteins which my immune system reacts to.
Hot Dang!  Drink a lot of beer and am sure that would contribute to a yeast build up in the system.
From previous knowledge, I was always amazed at how Italians could drink so much but have no advanced symptoms.  Come to find out, their main diet consists of regular use of oregano and garlic, which are anti-fungal.
In conclusion, whether it's a beer or a slice of bread, it does the same harm to my physical.

Steve,

Im not sure what is going on in your life. BUT..... this post was very very bad. You might want to post it on AA... not here. I have heard a lot of crap over the years, but this was at the top of the list. I don't know how other parents feel, but as far as my sweet little 5 year old goes I am not going to compare him with a beer drinking drunk.

Thank you for reminding me of why I hate the internet!!!

carolann

I completely agree with you. I just found this site today and have been reading through some of the messages.  I have been working with children with autism for the last five years and I can honestly say i have never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life.  Imagine trying to say that autism and alcoholism are similar.  I can only assume that the person who posted that message never had the pleasure of getting to know a person who has autism.  He clearly has no realisation of what autism is. I just wonder what exactly he feels he needs to educate people about?

Pls, somehow this was all misconstrued.  Accept my apologies for possibly presenting this in a way that offended anyone.
Autism is very destructive to the individual affected and the love ones around them.  With this goes a sensitivity to protect from further harm, which I greatly understand, seeing that I am severly autistic (although) functioning close to normal by adhereing to Dr. Shaw's advice and others) and spent 19 years as a diagnosed alcoholic.  This makes me somewhat of an expert here.  Especially since I'm autistic and live inside this mind of autism daily, moment by moment.  I'm not an outsider looking in and protecting, I'm inside and struggling to survive every minute.
If you'll keep an open mind to solutions and cures, rather than defending anything new, you'll make progress.  For example, I'm having a difficult time with the medical community, seems they are totally not with this.
Being the autistic that I am, I focus and don't give up till I get something worth  working with.  I've discovered  that  more was  known about autism in the early 1900's then is known today.  Matter of fact,  Edgar Cayce gave readings on 2 autism entities.  He gave amazing  solutions.  Such as stay away from wheat in any form, and recommended osteopathic adjustments to lumbar and cervical spine.  which we are now rediscovering recently.
The chinese believe that allergies begin with stress in the cervical and practice Tai chi to relieve the stress in that area.  Hmmmmmm.
that practice has been around for over 6,000 years.
When an individual stops learning, they stop growing.  With autism, every friggin' day for me is a challenge just to keep going, not screw up too much.
and research, research, and more research.  work hard on my spiritual, continue discovery.  I crave to be normal, will I be?  maybe not, but it's a goal to strive for.
I respect your attitude to protect, well, you do as you wish, I crave hard practical solutions that work, I just don't have the luxury of wasting anymore time with emotional desires and wishes, only hard core solutions to make my life a little better.
God Bless you, and wish you a comfortable life

So Steve I think what you were trying to say in your first post was that by drinking beer all thoses years ago you were just adding to your already exsisting proublems with your Autism? being that beer consist of many of the same things that cause gluten proublems? I think that is what i came away with maybe I'm wrong..I have thought of trying to put my son in Tai chi for balance and for relaxation..But as far as striving to be normal that is a tuff one cuz even people with out autism can not be considered normal so just strive to be the best you that you can be....Autism, just like other physical/mental ailments, has varying degrees of severity.  For example, Cancer, there are several types and each type normally begins at some level and progresses to worse.  Unless of course it's detected and corrections applied to arrest some of them.  Now don't take that as concrete and directly comparable to autism, just trying to lay out a parallel for explanation purposes.
Let's use a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being normal/healthy and 10 being the most severe.  Autism is comprised of many behavior and physical symptoms and each person afflicted with autism has different behaviors and physical problems.  So, using myself as an example: these are just a couple for demonstration.  (I plan to work up a full list of items)

Overall autistic:  8
Behaviors
  Aggression:  4
  Antisocial:  8
Physical
  posture:  8
  allergies:  9

These are the degrees if I don't watch what's going on.
the degrees are actually alot lower due to education and changing my lifestyle.  However, I do screw up and don't watch things or I just have to have a food that I shouldn't eat, and I pay the price.
For example;  beef - even a small amount, after 4 days, I'm completely non-verbal, takes 2 weeks before I'm able to communicate again.
I love sausages, so this one bits me every once in awhile.

Let's take a lessor degree of autism, around degree 2-4.  Which I believe I was born at.  The behaviors associated with this degree may be diagnosed as bipolar or manic-depressive, a label I carried for many years till things got worse and autism was finally diagnosed.

Alcoholism has the same symptoms/behaviors as an autistic at degree 3 or 4.

Throughtout life, mine being a 52 year library now, I can see 2 downturns.  The first in 1979 when I took a heavy dose of antibiotics and the 2nd in 2003 when I took 2 doses of Immune 26.
The 1st,  I went from degree 2 to 4, and the 2nd, I went from 4 to almost a solid 9 and things got bad, real fast.  It became a matter of survival.  Cause and effect became extremely obvious although difficult to relate the effect to the cause.  As my diet and environment was too diverse.  Within a short period of time, I developed what I call 'go safe' mode.  Which is to isolate myself and restrict my diet to a few items.  I'll continue this until I feel ok, which could be anywhere from 2 weeks to over a month.

example;  before I knew about beef, it's hard to relate the effect of non-verbal to consuming beef as it takes 4 days to come to full effect.  So, after going 'go safe' I bring in one item at a time to see what the effect will be.  Took me 2 years to finally get to the point that I can function.  Been to allergists, that was a big waste of time and money.
The allergist tested for beef and said there is no allergy.  Gosh, if I eat beef and the effect is non-verbal after 4 days - his skin test will not show anything after 20 minutes.  And, since the effect is a speech center that becomes disfunctional after 4 days caused by consuming beef, there never will be a reaction in the skin.
My life is now completely 'go safe', 'cause and effect' and 'trial and error'.
A coupla months ago, I contacted an allergist/immunologist and a behavior modification specialists.  After a week, they both brushed me off initially, they called me with extreme interest.  then I got to thinking, hey, wait a sec here, I'm not going to become a experiment.
Some of the reactions are severe and I'll not do it, even with a gun to my head.
They got a little frustrated with this attitude, then I told them, hey, you guys eat a bowl of cereal and I'll add some cyanide to see what effect that will have on ya.  They laughed and said, you're right.  When I expose myself to something normal to 'normies' it does some damage to me.

So, I'm on my own, to my own resources.  Which I will continue.
Just thought I'd share the knowledge with others to give them some 'tools' to work with.

If alcoholism had any link whatsoever to do with autism then all of my cousins on my dad's side would have it and none of them do.  The same thing on my mother's side.  Alcoholism runs on both sides of my family.  I can remember being at family reunions and seeing my aunts giving my cousins beer in baby bottles.  All of them grew up just fine.   I do have one cousin that thinks the world owes him everything but that is not an autism trait. ...Ok Steve I am not sure if you are still with us and I am sooo sorry you were misunderstood...perhaps I am little niave here and by the way it is late and I apologize for spelling isssues here...but when you posted this, the first thing i thought  was jacks favorite foods are milk and bread and the whole yeast and barley thing makes so much sense to me..you are dealing with parents who mostly have young children and maybe that is where the misunderstanding comes from ..but i for one am very interested in what you have to say, I have even e-mailed you before..but you may not remember.....so keep posting cause i need all the insight i can get...
Steve,   Very interesting...I'm sorry life has been so difficult for you.  I believe there are many causes for autism.   If food issues are what causes your problems, I'm glad you were finaly able to isolate the cause.  For some of the rest of us we can see other contributing factors: genetics, viruses, shots?, etc.     I could also understand how as a person on the spectrum you could turn to alcohol to search for a way out of a world that can be cruel and not understanding.   None of us as parents want to see this type of future for our kids.   That's why we are here looking for the best ways to help our kids.    I'm sorry you didn't get the help you needed when you were younger.....maybe it would have spared you the years spent in alcoholism.   AT any rate you can now go forward and live a positive life!!   Food sensativities are a thing to explore.... alot of our kids will only eat a limited diet....how do you take away the only things they will eat?  I think that would be cruelty.    God bless......bonnie

Amen Bonnie

MsSteelersFan38427.8185069444Steve is still on the wrong forum. Alcoholism is a chosen, aquired path. Autism IS NOT. I still find it offensive that one  would put the two subjects together. Is anyone moderating this forum? I'd hope that this space would be for ways to help my child.          JanetWow, I haven't been in here for awhile.  some of you are right on the money.
Yes, it is genetics and food allergies and much more.
That's why we're having such a tough time nailing this puppy down and solving it is that very reason.
We're a nation of taking a pill to fix it or we want it in sound bites.
Autism is a complex and complicated ailment with tons of symptoms.
It's very difficult to get to the 'root' and tackle it there and work your way out.
Dr. Shaw of Great Plains Labs in Lenexa Kansas has solid credentials and 'hit' upon the 'root' of all this.
He wrote a book, it's kinda in between 'layman' and 'medical professional' level reading:  Biological Treatment of Autism and PDD.
the main issues are; genetics, yeast, we're addicted to the very things that we're allergic to and  treatment.
We have to understand that allergens have a tolerance level, or breakpoint, or breakover point.
For example/
Beef, I can eat a small amount of beef every 4 days.  As beef will digest and break down into it's element within the body.  Some remnants of beef or it's components will stay in my system for 4 days.  So, in any 4 days running, I can eat a very small amount.  if I go over that amount in that time frame, my immunesystem will respond by attacking my speech center.
for Wheat, my breakover is a lot higher.  same with dairy.
some items are very low and extreme response.
We are each different depending upon our diet and environment at the time of the 'severe yeast' infection in the intestines or what we carried over from birth.
How to remove a food allergen from one's diet?  whew, that's a tough one.  Dr. Shaw recommends withdrawing slowly and presenting a new "ok" or healthy item in.
For me, I almost starved to death before I tried lettuce and potatos.
Advice to an 'outsider' to intervene in a youngster's diet.
GOOD LUCK!  us autistics can get very viscious.
oops!  aggression is one of the symptoms.
and any advice must be tailored per individual.
Dr. Shaw said beans are ok.  maybe for the majority, but I get extremely severe stomach cramping with just a small amount.
I can eat cantalope, but not Honey Dew, or lettuce, but not cabbage.
oranges, but not apples.
It was hell for me to find something 'safe' to eat.
How in the heck does one outside try to figure out what's right for someone else?
It seems an almost impossible task.
I was even food allergy tested.   the tests were a waste of time and money.
I recommend the 'muscle strength' response test.
have the afflicted hold an item in the their hand.  test their muscle strength by clinching fists of flexing arms.  Compare that tension with tension of an 'ok' item.
if the muscle tension is weak, the item is an allergen.
if the tension is normal or strong, the item is healthy.

Good Luck and God Bless

Steve Paschal

To Bonnie, when the time comes that you might 'remove' a food item from your child's diet, hope you're selling tickets to the fight, as it's gonna be one hell of a great battle.

Steve, First I would appreciate your edit on several of your posts where you have used profanity or the like.

Secondly I am sorry to sound rude as is not my intent but I am having a hard time buying what you are selling. No doubt you have done some research on autism. But it offends me that you would relate it to alcoholism. No matter how "misunderstood" you were. Regardless of how an alcoholic reacts to ingredients in alcohol and an autistic reacts to the food allergins they may have that affect the behavior, alcoholics can quit drinking, people with autism can't quit being autistic.

You say you are SEVERELY AUTISTIC right? Then how are you so high functioning? Care to explain?

I think I'm missing something here....... ???

Well, hmmm.
Where to begin?
Uh.
Let's get scientific here.
The gluten molecule is very similar to the nerve sheath molecule.  If a person is allergic to wheat, and consumes wheat, then the immune system will attack and attempt to destroy all molecules of similar make. Depending upon the immune system response, mild/severe, the nerve cell's sheath will be attacked and destroyed, leaving nerve cells bare or ulcerated.  Since nerves control all functions of the body much the same way wiring in a house does, there will be short circuits in thoughts or organ controls.
Along with that, there is either a yeast or a gene defect carryover at birth that allows yeast to grow uninterrupted in the intestines.  This will eventually cause 'leaky gut', allowing whole food particules to enter the body.  The immune system will respond to this as a 'harmful' intrusion and respond.  The lymphatic system will collect the 'destroyed' particules and deposit them into the blood circulation system at the neck.  To send to the liver or kidneys for removal.
Toss in multiple vaccination injection which confuses the immune system and heavy antibiotic treatments and a person can end up in serious trouble.
Also, our environment is heavily polluted with chemicals.  This was recognized thru research into what 'Agent Orange' did.  The result of that study was heavy exposure or long-term exposure to chemicals will harm the immune system.  This is called MCS (mulitiple chemical sensitivity) which I thought I was until a few months ago.
Since yeast will grow unchecked in the intestines and choke out good digestive bacteria, the intestines cannot take in digested food and neither can it expell waste into the stool.  The liver becomes overworked and then if there is exposure to heavy metals, like mercury or aluminum, the body cannot rid itself of these items and they load up in the system reaching toxic levels, harmful to our bodies.
Most times this is noted by large pore skin under the eyes or on the nose.

Severly Autistic?
yes, I've been confined to a mental institute for being catatonic and the same for being manic.  I've been homeless, changed jobs constantly.   I used to throw temper tantrums and am known for being very aggressive,  or 'in your face' kinda person.  There have been times when I'm content to sit for days and watch a battery charge.  I've never been able to sleep regularly, except for the last few months.  I've been to the emergency room twice, once for psychosis and another for restricted breathing.  I've always felt the need to communicate, but could not verbally express myself.  So, I always did tons of writing.
Took me 2 years to get here.  I eat only 'fresh' fruits and vegetables.  I have a inonic air filter to remove formaldehyde and pollens from the air I breath.  I have a water filter ($600) from Aquatic Reef systems to completely remove anything from water.  I take lots of vitamins and supplements to maintain my health.
But, I still screw up.  Two weeks ago, I couldn't resist those chocolate caramel turtles.  Only took one, and I thought I was gonna die.  I was extremely desparate.  Real weird emotions.  Thought for sure that I wasn't going to be around for a another day or so.  Was freaking out.  My dad talked me through it.  Kept me from going off the deep end.

you are right tho, I have painted a pretty picture.
Read your post this morning and it hit hard.  But, I needed it.  I feel like I've just gotten out of prison and I'm off in a dead run for freedom.  your post stopped me and I looked back over my shoulder.  What I saw made me cry for awhile.  When I 'look back' I see a city of devastation.  Burning, smouldering ruins of a past.  Most of it due to my own hands.  I am responsible for that.
Where do I begin the cleanup?  I don't know.
It's a huge task.
My first instinct is to educate others.  Find others in a similar situation to fellowship with.  To gain hope and trust thru understanding.  For there isn't time left in my life to correct what's been done in the past.  Hopefully, I can accomplish more, by speaking common sense and logic.  Open other's eyes to this dreadful ailment and build momentum in the public's eyes.  One matter I'm greatly concerned with is the medical profession's lack of knowledge here.  Seems the more educated medical people become, the dumber they are about autism.
One thing for sure, autism is more widespread then you can ever imagine.  In the future, we'll find that autism at different degrees has been accepted as other ailments.  And I truly believe, gonna stick my neck way out there for someone to chop it off, autism is responsible for cancer, arthritis, alziehmers, lupus, and tons of other stuff.
Here's one for ya, baldness is an early sign of adult onset autism.
High thyroid causes loss of hair.  Eating oranges will lower the thyroid.  I laughed at that one.  Well, later on I found oranges, Guess what?  my hair is growing back.
So far, I've only tapped into a 'tiny' fraction of what I've learned.
God is the source of all knowledge, therefore, if you wish to 'know' then I suggest you meditate on God.  He will fill you with knowledge and understanding as needed, for you to grow.
For further 'enlightment' I recommend studying Edgar Cayce, Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, toss in some meditative techniques from buddhism and read the Bible to learn about God and who Jesus is.
How can you 'play' and 'win' the game if ya don't know the rules of the game?  And if ya understand what the opponent's game plan is, all the better.

God Bless you in your journey

Steve Paschal

Steve,

Although some of your info does pertain to some of us parents. i don't think that this is the proper site for you to be channelling your energy. There are plenty of websites for autistic adults, many of whom probably share your struggles.

I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

I get it!
Ya'll are more into compensation.
Instead of finding the Cause of non-communication, tis better to spend time and money to treat the symptoms.
In other words, when I eat beef, I can't speak.
I don't eat beef, and I can communicate better then most.
Find the cause and the effect will go away on it's on.
No need for doctors and specialists.

This is a Free country.
God Bless.
Steve Paschal, over and outta here!
ADULT ONSET AUTISM???????? LOLin the fact that there is no one cause of autism found yet i find that there are many quacks out there on the internet who would dupe  a poor unsuspecting mother just trying to help her child. i have never been one to believe in the food theory although i know many people who believe it and feel that it has helped their child. steve's theories on alcoholism and austism are just too far out for me. i think this all shows everyone how much we need more research into autism and the cause so we can move ahead.Hey, to each his own.
Edgar Cayce said the truth is who you are at this moment.  which is Relative truth.

however, Absolute Truth is the truth whether you believe it or not, accept it or not, or even if ya like it or not.
Stuff like gravity, light and God are Absolute Truth.

If a tree in the forest falls and no one is around to hear it, does it make any sound?
(if you have think more then a few seconds on that one, then you're living in relative truth).
the answer, YES, whether anyone is around is irrelavent to the physics of nature.  If you thought on that one for very long, then you are completely engrossed in the arrogance of self importance.

There are tons of scientific evidence (Great Plains Laboratories of Lenexa Kansas, run by Dr. Shaw, who managed the CDC for 26 years and the Veterans Administration) to back up my side, and there is nothing but emotions to back up your side of the arguement.

If you choose to close your eyes and not see the evidence, then that is your Relative truth.  Which is fine with me.  As I'm not concerned with you, but with the one close to you that is suffering autism.  In your refusal to 'see' the Absolute Truth, that one is suffering and will receive little aid from you.  Therefore, God steps into the life of the autistic sufferer and loves them.

How do I know this?
My parents and my kids are autistic.  My parents choose to distance themselves from me, as I've changed.  My kids did the same, but now, after a few months, they've begun to recognize there is a link between our environment (food, chemicals, and such) that effect our behaviors.
I'll be patient with them, they've got a long way to go yet.

They're also young and rebellious to change.

To the lady that refuses to believe alcoholicism is a minor form of autitism; buckle your seatbelt, you're gonna be in for a long rough ride, as autism will be found to be the basis for many negative behaviors.

by the way, your 'emotional' basis of treatment is extremely expensive.  this way is homeopathic, FREE.

rejecting beef (it works) is a lot cheaper then special education and speech therapy (doesn't work or achieves very little).

Jesus said, "Knock and the door will be opened".

We know the right door to knock on, but it requires removing our ego, pride, and self-centeredness to enter.  And very few are willing to do that to enter into God's Realm.

Steve Paschal

P.S.

There was a doctor in a kingdom.  He invented a drug that would make everyone happy, but a little insane.  Soon, all the people of the kingdom were taking the drug.
Now, the king was in a bad spot.  He was not like the people he ruled, so he asked the doctor for the drug.  The doctor told him to 'let me think about this for a day or so'.
The doctor put some thought into this;  if he doesn't give the king the drug, then there will be 2 left that understand.  If he does give the drug, then, he will be the only one left who is rational, although he will  appear to be insane to the insane.  Or, does he take the drug and appear sane to the insane?
What does he do?

Experiment ladies, ask your husbands to read this.  Get his view.
BTW,
Absolute Truth is not a Political process.

As long as we debate the ways to discover Absolute Truth from our individual Relative truth perspectives, then all is well.

Steve Paschal
has anyone noticed that I use my name?

while eveyone else hides behind the mask of an alias.

Steve Paschal
Uh oh!
I found in this very website; allergy induced autism.
gosh, does that mean that autism could be brought in in adulthood?
the Veterans Administration now recognizes when multiple vaccinations are given at once, it causes vaccine induced autism.
jeez, can't get in the military till you are an adult.
Dr. Shaw points out since anti-biotics came out in the 50's, autism has become an epidemic.
gosh, that's after birth.

hmmmmm, does 'relative truth' + 'makeup' = fantasyland  ???????

I'll stick with evidence and ignore emotional terrorism......
Hot Dang!  did anyone pay any money to me for this information????
did I ask for any money?????
all this info is avail to anyone desiring to learn about autism.
it's free info.

check out the sidebar of the msg center and various places in this website...... cures for autism........
LOL, seems I'm been a victim of american female terrorism......

Takes a woman to raise a girl to be a woman,
Takes a man to raise a boy to be a man.....

Please, against better judgement, do not respond to his posts.

Please Everyone, I know some of you are looking for anything you can find to help your child with their autism. We all want to help our kids. But does anyone see the RED FLAGS here?

This individual claims to be severely autistic,...my son is PDD-NOS higher functioning than severe autism and he can't type and share thoughts and relations like this, even if it were choppy and broken.

Now this individual also claims his parents and children are also autistic? WOW! I guess specialists really want to study his family then because although there is an increased risk of having another child with autism,... I believe that risk is only something around a 10% increased! For his parents and children to all be autistic; thats UNHEARD OF! And back to SEVERE AUTISM,.. most of us have kids moderate to higher functioning and worry if our kids will live alone, or get married, hold a job, or have a family, This guy says he is SEVERELY AUTISTIC and yet he had children and apparently lives on his own. ??

If he has such a reaction to beef that he cant speak and he is preaching the diet, why would he (after making the relation to wheat rice and barely in beer as also being an allergin to autistics -gluten and casein- ) WHY would he still drink alcohol and yet it doesn't affect him like beef. ?????

In My Opinion this man has no clue, and If he is severely autistic he has more skills than my PDD-NOS son! THINK ABOUT IT the more severe the more disabled!

He is probably sitting there typing, laughing, and trying to post to get a reaction from us. If someone posts sympathy to him and buys into what he is selling,... he posts more, if someone challenges him or posts negativity he posts with bitterness and aggression.

He mentions posting his real name on the board, and asks why we don't. I am concerned with his posts he may be an unsafe individual! Please DO NOT GIVE private information such as your real name, address or phone number where you live etc. BE INTERNET SAFE! This *is* the internet, there are all kinds of fakes and phoneys. People prey on desperation of an unsuspecting person,.. we think he's able to help and we would do anything for our kids....

I urge all of you who have been offended by these posts or any of the like, to think about it and IGNORE THESE TYPES OF POSTS Until the administrator can view the posts and determine if the person responsible should be BANNED from the forum and all of their posts deleted.

Remember reading posts where people have said they tried other boards and didnt feel comfortable, that this board finally had what they were looking for? ... People who cared and understood and were helpful.... Don't allow others to ruin this board for us Don't let their posts turn away guests and new members. Don't let their posts give the wrong info to desperate parents and family members who are is the state of shock we were all in when that new diagnosis slammed into our worlds like the Tsuanmis did in Southeast Asia. The people who are desperate for help an would trust and believe in anyone.

I urge everyone who has been offended and feels as I do to IGNORE these posts. I also urge EVERYONE to PM the administrator asking people like this be banned and their posts deleted if they agree with me. If you dont agree PM the administrator in their defense. Thanks all for your cooperation I know I may take flack over this but to me its worth it I feel that strongly about posts of "questionable nature".

JUST A REMINDER .... The more signs and symptoms you show of autism the more severe the autism is .....

Common Characteristics

The Person With Autism

Speech Issues no speech; non-speech sounds; delayed speech; echolalia (mimicing words without any understanding of meaning); pronoun confusion; frustration with lack of speech common
Interaction Issues lack of peer interaction; lack of eye contact; seemingly unaware of other people; treating people as objects; parallel play rather than interactive; lack of imaginative play
Behavioral Issues not interested in being picked up/cuddled; preoccupied by hand movement; flapping hands (especially when excited or over stimulated); spinning; balancing; tiptoe walking; aggressiveness towards others; lack of interest in "normal" toys (often preferring kitchen tools); obsessive toward patterns; repetition in behavior (performing the same act over and over again, such as rewinding one section of a movie on the VCR to watch many times); lining things up; self injury; needing to live with a routine that does not change
Sensory Issues dislike of certain sounds, textures and/or tastes; dislike of being touched; very passive or very active behavior; nervousness; unaware of various physical stimuli such as pain; covering ears at loud noises; "blanking out" in active environments; often seem to be uncomfortable in extreme temperatures
Splinter Skills drawing; musical; math; calendars; memory; computers; mechanical ability such as complex video/audio equipment
Biological Markers MRI scans sometimes abnormal; serotonin levels may be raised; bowel problems; some children afflicted with seizures; sleep disturbances (not requiring as much as other children of the same age); often unusually attractive children with large eyes

Low-Functioning & High-Functioning Autism

One of the most confusing aspects of autism is how it is unique to every person on the spectrum. No two people with autism are identical in how they display symptoms and behaviors; they also are completely unique in how each responds to a variety of treatments. Much of this uniqueness presents a struggle for the autism community.

One hint that I can give all parents and educators is to mentally divide autism into two major categories. Remember this isn't hard and fast, but it will help you as you search for information and read the stories of other parents and their experiences. These two categories are:

Low-Functioning Autism

Children with low-functioning autism are more likely to display mental retardation, epilepsy, and extremely limited receptive/expressive language skills. They are extremely weak on “theory of mind,” and overload on too much sensory stimulation quite easily. As a rule of thumb, testing will show IQ ratings of 70 or below.

High-Functioning Autism

Children with high-functioning autism are much more efficient with expressive and receptive speech, less likely to suffer from epilepsy, and have IQ scores of 71 or above. Although too much sensory input can overload them, they have a higher tolerance and learn to desensitize themselves. These children have a stronger grasp on the theory of mind and can empathize with the feelings and reactions of others.

Just a Tip

Remember, these are general rules. It is a guide to tuck in the back of your mind for those times you are with other parents of children on the spectrum. In a forum or support group, you may find that the needs of one family differ greatly from the needs of your own, and you might be tempted to interject thoughts of what works for you. And that is good; that is what support systems are all about. But, if a parent is trying to decide if dating and driving is appropriate for their child with Asperger's, a parent of an LFA child is apt to react negatively. Those are dilemmas that those parents don't share. Misunderstandings and sometimes rather heated debates can be the result.

The needs of the child with low-functioning autism are very challenging. Parents are stretched to the limits emotionally, mentally, financially and quite often, physically. They worry about the future. And they worry about what others will say about them and unfortunately the tendency turns toward isolation.

I can't tell you how many emails I have received from parents with LFA children. They are afraid to talk about the serious problems they have because of the responses they get. “If you would just do.....,” or “The parenting methods you use are causing much of your problems and...” You get the idea. I know the readers of this site are very informed about autism, so this is probably just “more-of-the-same” information.

But just maybe, it is a reminder about the bonds we have regardless of the roads others travel that we can never walk. Peace and blessings to all of you in 2005!

Well lets hope that's all settled then.

While I cannot believe for one minute that this person shares the same  disabilities as my son or that of the children of other parents here I'll still pray and hope that his confused soul finds help hope and peace for whatever the ailment is which does clearly seem to trouble him.

<My son chose this oppurtunity to come out here and first test the monitor with a fingerflick before spitting a rasberry at it.>

My son finds glass is nifty for flicking and sometimes for spitting on so he can then admire the prism-effect in it, especially on a computer monitor. Though he can't read and has no concern for what mom is doing behind his efforts, just the same I thought I'd add his 'comments' for 'posterity's sake.'

fitting response to what was written in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the support in this matter
