How to find the right pediatrcian?

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

my son was diagnosed with pdd nos by a psychologist my son's ped reffred me to and only because i pushed her to do it because when he  was evaluated by CPSE they told me how blind she was of not seeing my son has symptoms since he was 2 yr old. now he is 3. Anyway i havent senn her since may when i got the referral and started findinga right school for him and near us. anyway, we found a good one and he will be getting all his therapies and they are a  great staff. cladssroom of 10 kids, has  1 head teacher ad 3 aides. so he will have attention. we already met everyone and im excited he starts the full year he was approved for.

now i want to get a pediatrician that has some knowledge about this. how can i search for one under my medical insurance? i have a book with doctors but they just like family doctors etc... i want a ped who knows about this type of conditions. any advice where i can go to or call?

Very few pediatricians have any knowledge of this nor do they want any.  They seem to see themselves as in charge of the mechanics of a child's health -- ht., wt., temp., infections, etc.  I don't fight the tide.  I just use our son's pediatrician for illnesses and bodily health checkups and school paperwork.  I use his psychiatist, who prescribes his meds, for all the rest.  If he needs some special area looked at, I go to a specialist.  Pediatricians are for the simple health issues, not for autism.  Unless they are developmental pediatricians and then they don't take care of the day-to-day stuff.  So you need both. You can try calling your insurance carrier and asking of they have any peds listed as a specialist as such.  I know when I called for a psychologist for my son they had some listed with specialties in autism, developmental delays, etc.  But I think the previous poster is right on-the ped with take care of the day to day illnesses but we will need to find a psychiatrist or psychologist for the specialties.  I'm currently searching for one who will take a 2 year old - none will by me!!!! And if they do, they don't accept my insurance and I can't afford to pay myself.

try a developmental pediatrician in addition to your regular ped.
