fragile x

I remember a while back some of you talked about having the test done for this. Did anyone get a positive? I'm wondering if the Dr. automatically orders the testing after the diagnosis for autism is given, or if they just see some warning signs. Our ped ordered test for this shortly after the diagnosis and some others  like seizures that cause speech delays and something else I couldn't quite understand. If a child has fragile x do some of the same therapies that help with autism still work? I guess I shouldn't worry about it yet, but I have read that over 80% are moderatly to severly mentally impaired and it seems this would change all the thoughts on therapy and schooling.  ThanksFragile X is the cause of autistic symptoms in some kids.  I know of one kid with Fragile X.  Yes, those kids have some mental retardation, but so do many, many ASD kids who do not have Fragile X.  Fragile X changes NOTHING when it comes to treating the child's autism.  The autism is the same.  It's just that you KNOW the cause.  That is important for making decisions about having more children (I know that that does not apply to you) or informing the NT kids in the family, should they want to become parents some day.  The boy I know with Fragile X is diagnosed as PDD-NOS and mild mental retardation. He swims on my son's swim team and there is no way I could have ever told that he was any different from any moderately affected ASD child.  Even in ASD children who do not have IQ's in the mentally retarded range, most score below 70 on Adaptive tests like the Vineland.  These don't give the actual IQ but they give a score that judges how well a child USES his IQ in the REAL world. The answer for the MAJORITY of ASD kids (even ones with superior IQ's) is "not very well."  So having an IQ in the retarded range, while it makes some things more challenging, probably doesn't effect real-world functioning much more than simply having an ASD does.  I hope this doesn't sound even more confusing. The bottom line is that a diagnosis of Fragile X changes nothing.  Just give more info about having children in the future.
