Still so confused...HELP!

I'm no expert either, but what you wrote doesn't sound like ASD to me either. I would get a copy of the dev ped's report (you can request it and they have to give it to you according to HIPAA). There must be something that she is seeing that gives her concern and you should know what it is.

By the way, I think most moms of NT boys would LOVE to have their not-even-3 year old boy toilet trained! I think 2.8 years old may be too young to tell in your case. We wouldn't have gotten a diagnosis at that age either - although my son had a few more quirks than yours does at that age. But, he was my first and I didn't know any better! He is PDD-NOS too, but some symptoms are coming out stronger now - and some are fading away as well. My ds is developing some good social skills as well. Today, he was playing at the Y and this other little boy came over anc started playing with him. So, my ds asked him what his name was and the other little boy told him. Then the little boy asked my ds what his name was and ds told him and asked him if he wanted to play. Sure! A year ago, I probably would have cried seeing that as he didn't do that at all. So, he has made a lot of progress. Now, if he would just stop saying he's in a bad mood all the time!

I know what you feel like thinking its SOMETHING. DD has HFA dx but teacher doesnt think so. Doesnt look like the garden variety lang delay to me. Sometimes NOT knowing is unsetteling. Believe it or not I was more comfortable knowing what to research. My daughter was this exact way, no specialist wanted to make the call on it. Everyone just passed the buck... she was finally dxed and she rarely does any of the repetitious stuff anymore. No one can really tell now that she is HFA unless I point things out. Her Teachers all think she is just a normal kid. Yeah, personal space is a big deal here too! She has to talk right in my face and tap tap tap me constantly! She useed to repeat till I thought I was going to lose it! She has really made alot of progress with those behaviors. What kind of experts and what do they say worries them? What types of behaviors worry them? They must have told you something. Has he been to a developmental pediatrician or a NeuroPsych? Most ASD kids do not interact well or have a strong interest in interacting with other kids and have poor eye contact. My son is higher functioning and he plays a little, but would rather play alone. He looks down when new people talk to him. He seems a lot less autistic at home and school than in unfamiliar places. What is worrying you and others? I believe you see "something." And I trust parent gut. Just trying to narrow down his specific issues? The personal space thing is really just one thing. Is there more? The problem is all ASD kids are different. MIne has PDD-NOS, atypical autism, and is friendlier and "less autistic" than others on the spesctrum, but it's still there. pammar38883.7400925926I have told my story a few times on here.  DS was seen by the Dev. Ped. in Feb and she gave no dx, saw some concerns and wants us back in a year.  DS is now 2.8, was tested by the SLP and was found to have average expressive and receptive skills.  He is toilet trained.  He speaks 4-5 word sentences.  He plays well with others.  He transitions well at day care.

However, I am still concerned about his lack of understanding of personal space (he will step on my feet, head-butt, etc.), his inconsistency with answering questions, and sometimes he repeats the same thing over and over (like a request until he gets his way).

I have no idea what to do.  Does this sound like ASD?

HELP!  I am slowing going crazy.  We have accessed all available services...but I can't stand the waiting and not knowing for sure.  ARGH!!!

Andrea :)

There are pdd tests on line at childbrain.com, get another opinion if you feel something in your gut. What you mention does not sound like ASD to me, i have no experience with your child, though. Have you read many books on ASD or have you been around many ASD kids?

I have been all over the internet and have been to supoprt groups with other ASD parents but we always feel like we don't belong, or that DS is too high functioning or something.  I can totally empathize with what parents of severe ASD kids are going through, I am a Special Ed. Resource teacher so I know what I am looking for.  There is just 'something' about DS, but I don't think it's ASD.

I did the childbrain and got no PDD but why wont the "experts" dismiss him already???!!!
What do you mean about the "experts" not wanting to dismiss him? I don't get it.  A child of 2.8 whose only apparent problem is that he stands too much in you personal space does not seem like a child with any sort of disability. However, I guess there's more to it than that.  It might just be too soon to tell. But please do let us in on what these "experts" are saying. You can try getting another opinion. It would be impossible for any of us to know. You may have to wait. It often takes years to get the ASD dx., even when it's obvious My layperson's opinion is he doesn't sound ASD to me, but I'm not the one with that degree. pammar38883.6230208333
