My son Tyler, 8 years old, diagnosed high-functioning autistic, is going to a new dentist today.  Dental problems have been running wild with my son.  For the last 3 1/2 years I have been bounced around from dentist to dentist.  He has had probelms with abscessed teeth, cavities, and grinding his teeth.  It seems once I find a dentist that might work they tell me they can't treat him because of the "difficulty" of treating him or they refer me somewhere else.  The last dentist I went to with Tyler was a pediodentist and they wanted to do the work as an outpatient surgery which my insurance wouldn't cover most of it (I have only had dental insurance for the last 2 years).  Now this dentist I am going to today prescribed an anti-anxiety pill that will help Tyler with the anxiety and make him a little drowsy so he will cooperate.  Has anyone ever had this probelm??  I am just curious...I am new to these boards

We had a problem with our first  pediatric-dentist. My son  was probably 4 and had major sensory issues which I discussed with the dentist in advance (we didn't have a diagnosis yet,  except sensory Integration dysfunction,  speech delays, and horrible temper tantrums,  and this was 12 years ago).   I left this dentist when he came out after our first cleaning  and said "you call it sensitive,  I call it spoiled!" (my son screamed the entire time, and they asked me to leave the room as they held him down to clean his teeth! - I have developed a backbone since)  I immediately changed to a GREAT dentist who really did understand my sons issues and alleviated all of his fears and anxiety without the need of any medication or straps.  I think it just depends on the dentist , I hope you find one!

I'm taking my son to his first dentist appt today!!!  I let them know that he has sensory issues around his mouth and anxiety ect.  I also let them know upfront, not to push, that I want to make this a good first time!

The assistant was great, said that even if he just sat in the dentist chair and talked, that was okay and we could take it at the speed my son needed!!!  I found the dentist by talking with other parents.

I shop around and find the best one... and talk to other parents to see who has the best bedside manner.

Let me know what you come up with... I know K has some issues with his teeth already and will need the tips!!  I'm still worried about getting him to into the actual office, nevermind getting work done!!!
