I am new hereWelcome to the board! WOW!!! I have heard several times that Florida was terrible at services for Specialneeds but I haven't heard it from parents.I guess its true! Thats really sad to hear. anyways I'm from Massachusetts and Although its VERY hard to find services here, they have somewhat good services but they don't tell you about most of them! You really have to adocate strongly to get anything here!!! I'm still struggling with an afterschool program for Kristian! Goodluck with your move. WELCOME! We are in Northern California & the services are GREAT here! The Eureka Scool district is well known for their Autism services.(Granite Bay,Roseville) Although it is expensive to live in this area. Washington has pretty good services and depending on where you live, prices are reasonable. We live in the tri-cities and it is reasonable Thanks again for helping me with this. I am looking into all the states that you all have said, and I hope to be moved by the end of summer.Calif has good services if you are in the cities. We are in a rural area of Calif, and while services are improving, they are lacking in certian areas. It also varies school district to school district. Some provide alot (usually in the high priced areas), others the bare minimum required by law. CA has great resources but very pricey too... New York offers tons of services, but you'll find the prices here are nearly what you see in Hawaii.Thank you to all who has responed to my post! on the is land that I am on ( the big Island) there is not much for helpmy son. We did go to Honolulu and were getting help and my son was in a grate place. the problem I am having is that I can not find housing over there under 2000 to 3000 dollers for a 2 bedroom house, I do not have that kind of money as will as the places to get housing have whating list up to 3 to 7 years. so I have got to move. I will look into the states that you all have said and I think you for your time. I am glad I found this place!
Welcome!!! this is a GREAT place. Whatever you do, don't move to Florida. I live in Florida and the services are terrible. I have heard new jersey and new york are great places. Welcome to the board. If you can bear the cold weather, Massachusetts has decent services too. But you really have to search for them. Welcome! Look around this site and you will find lots of info!Welcome Eve! I am new here too...and have come to love this place. We live in Central Texas. I have heard that Dallas Texas has tons of services....here in Austin, there are few. Noah sees the one doctor that specializes. We used to live in NY. That was 7 years ago. I remember trying to find out what was wrong with our son, and having no support there...little was known at that time. Noah is now 9. I am sure by now things would have changed- but the cost of living in all of the places I mentioned is high...unless you live on the outskirts and commute. I give you many kudos for moving to help your son. Please let us know how it goes! Take care of you! so I hope I put this in the right place. I am from Hawaii, I am looking to move to the mainland to get my son better care. I have know idea of were to go. my son is 5 years old almost 6 and is PDD-NOS( we think. DR me and some of he's school) I need help in finding the best place to get the help my son needs. I am hoping you all may have places that are good as will as the cost of living is not to much. I thank you for your time. Ohio has some good services. We have two awsome charter schools (free). One is in Maumee and the other is in Bryan. (M.O.D.E.L.) We also have a much lower cost of living than Hawaii... We are considering moving for kintergarden. (We live elsewhere in Ohio)Go to www.wrightslaw.com There, you will find out all about the FEDERAL law (IDEA) that REQUIRES every single state to provide all kinds of help for every single special education child. Of course, some states are better than others because each state has the option of offering MORE services than is required. But every single state, including Hawaii, has to obey the law and implement the provisions of IDEA. No state you go to will AUTOMATICALLY just take care of your son. You have to ask for help, in writing, and then know what your child's rights are and insist that the school district give him what he has a right to have. So, before you leave Hawaii, make sure you've demanded the right things. Get an advocate. Even if you move, you are still in Hawaii and you child needs help now. Make them give him that help. Perhaps if you post a thread asking other Hawaiians to give you some suggestions, you get responses about what you can do locally. I've see at least one other Hawaiian post. Even if you do decide to move, you need to help your child, now, too. Good luck.Well Florida is not the place! I have heard Ohio, Jersey and New York have great services. That is the best I can offer you. Just look at what you think is appropriate for your child and do a research on the states you think might be good for you and narrow it down that way. IHIHAloha! :) You will not only find tons and tons of information here, but also, the support here is magnificent! People here "truly" understand...no matter what the situation is. Hope you find these people as helpful as I do. :) |
