Hello Everyone, I think this is such a great forum..I am new to it I have a question...My son who has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS ( a mild form) however he will be 3 next month and is still not talking...says only Go and NO....He understand some stuff but not all.... Has anyone heard of Tomatis? Have you done it? We are looking into getting my son treatment but wasn't sure. We have spent thousands and thousands of dollars with therapy and what was given to us from the government..I feel like maybe this is my last hope.... His behavior is great of course has his tantrums like any child his age, plays well with other children a bit of a loner at daycare, limited to food..but otherwise, we think he is going to be fine once he starts talking because you know a mother feels these things and it is not denial (believe me) Thanks Diana Diana,I would not recommend spending the money on Tomatis. The results that I have seen are negligible and there is no research to support the efficacy of this. I know that Tomatis claims that there is evidence to support their efforts, but as a Speech-Pathologist, I have not seen any real positive evidence of their program. Just some thoughts. I've heard of Tomatis, but we didn't use it for Connor's mediation settlement therapy. We went with a Fast Forward-type program with an educational therapist, and it was very beneficial. barnekim, Tomatis has a lot of research to back it up, albeit mostly anecdotle. Just read Awakening Ashley for some first hand info. on the benefits. I work with many Speech Language Pathologists who all are big proponants of the method. If you know anything about the vestibular system and its effects on language (and the central nervous systems) and study the affects that Tomatis has on this system, you can begin to understand how Tomatis brings about positive changes for your child. fitforkids,Agree, the research to back it is up is mostly anecdotal and there is research that it is not effective which is not anecdotal. I am well aware of the vestibular system and the effect that Tomatis is supposed to have as it ties it all together. Again, I am glad that you have seen positive effects. I have not and will not/would not recommend it. To each their own. I thought I had read all of the research on Tomatis. If there is more information out there, I would love to see it. Can you post the names of the articles and or authors of the articles which you are alluding to? I would really appreciate it. Even looking at ASHA's position statement on Auditory Integration Training and it states that even though this type of intervention has been in use for 10 years, there is "no preponderance of of evidence exists to document treatment effectiveness." There is more research documenting this in the speech/language hearing journals, but to be honest, I don't have the time to do the search to get the specific dates. Just look up Auditory Integration Training and the research articles will come up. Again, to each their own. Kim Language has to be useful to your son or he isn't going to use it. Put his favorite toys up where he has to ask or attempt to ask to get them. Pretend you don't know what he wants just for a few seconds to get him to attempt more use of language. This stuff seems so simple but our ST used these techniques with our son and eventually they do work. |
