Has anyone been to a M.A.P.S. introducation seminar or to a M.A.P.S training at the Gordon Pomares Cenre in Alberta, BC? I am considering going to one and am trying to decide if it is worth it. I have a 6 year old son with autism. I want him to have a happy life including his childhood. He is happy now but I know if I could just find the right combination of something....it would be better. I know it is not going away and there is not a cure but I feel there must be something more.My son has been doing MAPS since February and I have seen a lot of changes in him. He will be 12 at the end of this month. I live in California.I have read many of the postings to these message boards and beleived that maybe someone would want my opinion. I am a professional who works with children with autism. I also work with parents and teachers. I know that parents want the best for thier children. I am a parent myself. I also beleive that teachers work very hard and want the best for children. I think that children with autism are unique and special. I really enjoy the successes that I see, yes every day. Very often the successes that I see may be minor to others but to us who work daily with children with this disability, these "minor" sussesses are milestones. I also see this as an opportunity to build on those successes. As a professional and after reveiwing many websites and message boards, I see many parents seeking a cure or a very effective treatment for their child. I beleive that when considering a treatment program for your child one should evaluate the empirical research regarding the claims of the treatment. By this I mean that the study should include many participants and follow the guidlines of the scientific method that we all learned in elementary school. This findings of the research should be the same findings in many studies and not just a few. The treatment should be very descriptive of the procedures and how each procedure works. The expecations of the improvements should be realistic and economical. If it costs your life savings and cliams to make drastic positive changes, you may want to think again. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder which means life long. I truly believe that children with autism do make gains and successes and that all people have a place in this world. It is my opinion and recommednation that when we evaulate treatments for children it is extremely important to examine that the claims of the treatment have good solid reasearch to back it up and that the cost ot parents is a reasonable one. ![]() Ann ![]() ![]() Linda, I would very much be interested in speaking to you about MAPS.
