Any Legal avenues???

Hi, My name is Carol and I have a 18 yr old autistic son, Warren. I am new to this site, never been really good at navigating the Web. Warren is 6' 1 1/2" 245 lbs of sweetness. He is mostly non verbal, from time to time he will say something that is completely appropriate, lucid and sometimes very funny. I love his humor. He likes to play games, childish as they might be, he likes to have fun. I am looking to move back to Texas. We lived there for 11 years then the divorce came and I moved to sunny California to be close to family. I am finding the schools are much better in Texas for both my children. Warrens schooling consisted of life skills - making a bed, folding laundry, hanging up clothes, washing dishes, etc.. Very forward thinking on behalf of these kids. Actually taught Warren to file alphabetically and numerically to three letters. There are wonderful group homes there and Warren has been on a waiting list for approx 7 years. His number was 1129, now he is #60. Since our family income was always above poverty (barely sometimes) we have never been eligible for disability benefits for Warren. We are now ... He is 18 and eligible. Yesterday I took him for the Mental exam required by Social Security...The doctor told me that "they" have found that the Mercury in the childhood inoculations (put there to increase the shelf life of the shots) is the culprit. I wonder if anyone out there knows of a class action suit that is pending, and seeking more steam - cause I am pretty steamed, to join them. Our children are our futures, and these pharmaceutical companies cannot affect their lives to this degree and not be held accountable. He deserves something for all the frustration he has endured, he will never drive a car, do the things most of us take for granted - due to the affects of this "preservative". I am not going to live forever and he will need to be cared for. Ill be looking in for a response. Thank you in advance. Do I sound mad? This did not have to happen. Warrens situation has meant sacrifice from all members of our family, and was a strain on my marriage (good riddance). Thanks again. My son was perfectly fine until he recieved all his baby shots . Jackie I too was very leary about the shots that were given to my son. He is 9 and was diagnosed with AS, a hight functioning form of autism i was also told that it was genetic, go figure, i don't know what to believe. I watched Imus in the Morning on msnbc and he had the author David Kirby on there. He is the writer of the book called Evidence of Harm. It is about the autism epidemic and the mercury in the shots. Apparently he looks at the issue from both sides in the book. What got him interested in the subject is a provision in the Homeland Security Act called Eli Whiley. There is a federal database out there that has data on all the shots given and the level of mercury in them butthe fda and the cdc doesn't want people looking at it. They claim violation of privacy but all the names and date of births is removed from this database. It was a very interesting interview. According to the author there was a study done by a professor from the University of Arkansas that states that autistic have a very high level of mercury in their system. And in some cases once the high levels is removed they basically recover. This study also showed that the autistic kids don't have in their system the ability to fight off the levels of mercury in their system like other people do. There recently was a study done in Texas that showd that if you lived near a power plant your kid would develop autism. Kirby said there are a few bills pending in congress and if all of them were passed then us parents would only have three years to sue the drug companies. He also said in his opinion he believes if they were sued now there wouldn't be enough evidence out there to get a verdict in the parents favor. I don't think there is a link but in the off chance that there is a link , why is congress protecting the drug companies once again? Why is the media just ignoring this issue? Apparently the only one that is really talking about it on a consistent basis is Imus. I know he has talked about autism recently. I generally don't watch him but am glad I did this morning. Tabitha That's interesting Tabitha, I suppose the gov is protecting the drug companies because they want to continue vaccinations to avoid world wide epidemics of lethal diseases. Perhaps the risk of autism is presumed less terrible than the risk of the other potential out breaks. I'm sure the media is afraid to make statements for fear of slander accusations by the drug companies. It is all very complicated.....drug prices are so high now can you imagine what would happen if we all got to sue? A similar thing just happened with the whole VIOXX and CELEBRIX issue......people were having heart attacks due to the drug, but the drug companies managed to get out of that lawsuit too..... Many people were hoping to get some money out of it, but I doubt they ever will. My dad was all excited, he thought he had a good chance of recouping his lost income and all the $$ he had spent on the meds over the years (he had a heart attack and bypass surgery after being on Vioxx for fibromyalgia) I told him not to get his hopes up. Now they have decided not to remove the drug from distribution.....just put a disclaimer on it not to use if you are subject to heart disease. So what would they do for immunizations? Put a disclaimer on it saying do not use if you are subject to autism? If we all had a crystal ball maybe we would know if we are subject to this stuff!! Frustrating!! bonnie Yeah and the kicker is if your kids are not up to date on their immunizations they cant go to school. It's okay to sue the cigarette makers but we can't sue the drug makers. I know that here in this state, SC you can sign a religous waiver for your children to not have the shots and still be able to attend public school. I don't know about any other state though. |
