NVLD

Might want to have her evulated by the school Autism Team just to make sure she is not Autism Spectrum Disorder. You are more than welcome to post on this board. It sounds like you have a lot of common with us. My son is 11 and has Asperger's syndrome and learning disibilities. Welome to the board. Hang in there!  I hope you can find some support, it must be difficult right now.  Stop in and share with us here.  Everyone here is really supportive and sometimes we all just need someone to listen. My 13 yo daughter was recently diagnosed with NVLD although I realize this is a message board for autism there is not much out there for NVLD and it is listed in so many areas under the "autistic spectrum".  My daugher has alot of social skills deficit and being in middle school it is emotional devestating her and this process of watching her is killing me.  Her school doesn't even seem to understand the disorder.  When she was diagnosed in 6th grade we finished schooling that year in a traditional public school but the problems persisted so we then moved her into a charter school where the social issues again seem to be taking over and really distracting her from her education.  We live in Massachusetts and if anyone has any suggestions on programs, schools or even just advice I would truly appreciate it.  I have not been able to find any type of support group and I don't know anyone else whose child has this LD.

Hi Kellie,

Sorry to hear about your daughter's troubles. I'm not sure as to where to point you because I don't know much about NVLD but I do know that it is quite similiar to Aspergers. I'm in MA too and would try to get intouch with the Ferderation of children with special needs. their website is www.fcsn.org, it's a wonderful group that deals with children with all types of disablities and they have a great parent to parent program aswell as parental support and is a wonderful resource for educational issues.  I also wouldn't hesitiate calling around to the different Autism resource centers, although not quite on the spectrum ( I think) it's so close to it that they may beable to point you in the right direction. With this Dx, you should beable to put an appropriate plantogether, speech therapy, focusing in on social skills and pragmatics, Ot for any sensory issues she may have and access to an LD teacher because technically , she is learning disabled.  I would also talk to your spec ed dept, most ciies and town have a sped pac- a wonderful resource to keep you up to date on school issues and gets you intouch with other parents.

13 is a tough age and Ithink all of our hearts break right along with yours.

Hopes this helps alittle..
