Grant said baby today

Tuesday night my youngest son got hurt and hurt his mouth and Grant acted concerned.  Well this morning when Grant got up , he pointed into the bedroom where his baby brother sleeps and said baby!  He would only sign baby before.  Grant is still considered basically non verbal, but he is slowly gaining words.

wtg Mom and Grant!!!!   Signing is the first step...now that he actually said "baby" you KNOW he wants to verbal.  Now you need to start labeling everything...I am not talking putting pics or note cards all over the place...I am talking about a cup is a cup...no matter if it is turned upside down..or on the floor it is a "cup"...open the "door"...turn the "light" on....bring me your "plate"....let's read a "book"...once he gets that down, you can start on prepositions...put the clothes IN the dryer....climb OUT of the tub...put the cup ON the table...

Doesn't it just make your heart flutter just KNOWING he is gonna talk!  :)  It is like AJ's speech tutor said to me..."it might take him a lil longer to get there, BUT he WILL get there!  :)  Does his ST give you vocabulary cards to work with?  That is how AJ started..signing the first set of cards...since he wants to be verbal, she skipped signing and now we are helping him "say" the words.  She also does sounds...if ONLY Grant could be here...she is the greatest SLP I have met!  She used to work for the school here..operative words "used to"  ...they told her to tell parents their children didn't need speech!  That is when she bascially told THEM to take a flying leap on a dounut and then some!

Yes Grant's ST gives us cards to work with and he also has a talking photo album that he is using to help tell us what he wants.  Whenever he uses his book to tell us what he wants or signs, we encourage him to try and say the word, even if it is just the beginning sound, atleast he is trying.that is great to hear that he is trying!  Approximations are good, too.  As long as we can get them to "try" we are moving them in the right direction.  :)  Isn't it amazing how quickly they pick up on this stuff!  Talking photo album?  Never heard of that, but it sounds good to me! :)

WTG GRANT!!!! Ia m so happy that he was able to speak and even act concerned! Not many kids with autism show concern for others.

That is AWSOME!!! Doesn't it just make you feel sooo good!! Parker said "cookie" the other day & I almost dropped him! He is also nonverbal & occasionaly a word will come out of nowhere.Just goes to show us that they are aware & they do hear us, even if it doesn't seem like it.

WAY TO GO GRANT!!!

Oh yes it is such a wonderful feeling to hear him say words, any words.  His very first word was mama at 3 years old and that was one of the best days.  Now at 5 1/2 he has maybe 7 clear words and some aproximations of words.  But I just wait and hope that one day it will all come to him

It WILL happen!  He is getting there!  I know how you feel..boy do i ever!  However, we must ALWAYS keep the faith!  I am right here beside you..i know what it is like waiting to hear their own lil voice.  Even when we do our vocab cards..alphabet..numbers...colors..AJ still has that "grunt"  BUT at least he is "trying"  :)  We MUST give our children credit for ALL these struggles they go through and KNOW they will get there!  :)WTG Grant!!!  That is awesome!  You must be smiling ear to ear!!! Great job Grant!
