My daughter is 5 and has PDD-NOS, she has been in constant therapy speech/o.t./developmental since the age of 2. She is very high functioning however the tantrums are out of control they go on for 45 minutes sometimes, I have to sit on her to stop her from potentially hurting herself. Other times, she drops in the street if she decides she's going back to do whatever it is we just left, the store friends house, whatever. She's a big girl 48" and 82 lbs., so it's hard for me to physically control her or pick her up when were not home. We tried a whole list of meds including risperdal that worked for 6 weeks then we fell flat. I don't like giving her meds it was a last resort and I won't try any more. However I'm on a waiting list at Childrens Memorial for a psychiatrist and I have a June appt there w/ Neuro specializing in Developmental Disorders. Anyone have any ideas or natural supplements that have helped their child transition better or am I staring in the face of meds again.
Any input and help would be greatly appreciated I'm desperate. This consumes our lives 24/7 and I am constantly reading about ideas but it's exhausting. There's someone on every corner that wants your money and doesn't care about the long term effects for your child. Please help. Hi Rosalie, We are trying (CSTI) Cognitive Social Intergration Therapy. It's where you actually set up a situation for a crises and then use talk therapy to show your child how to deal with different situations that causees a crises, It sounds hard but we are desperate to. I found this method in a book called Parenting Your Apserger Child. I know your daughter has PDD-NOS, but her trantrums sound a lot like my sons If you want to read this book I found it in the library and read it first before I got my own copy. If you hear of any supplements that help please let me know. I am also exhuasted. what about eye q tablets/liquid? they have a very good calming effect on my 8yr autistic its not always ideal but a good concentration of dla eha and omega three/six/twelve etc Rosalie- My daughter who is nearly 3 ( and anyone other than you guys on the site try to tell me that this is"typical" tantrum behavior for a toddler- and I could SCREAM), she carries on over things that dont even make sense. I dont even most of the time understand what sets her off b/c if you allow her to watch "one more Barney", etc, etc. she is so escalated that she no longer wants it and it even makes it worse offering it to her. It too consumes my life as she will sream and cry for over an hour at times and if I walk away, it makes it WORSE!!! I too need help!!!! Please!! so what help is their i've had my son on omerga 3 fish oils and they help about 2 start the gabba is a calm house crazy. just so i can try something newKatelynn
My daughter went through that also around 3 years old. Is your daughter verbal and if she is to what degree. Gianna was non-verbal, she had a vocabulary at 3 of about 25-35 words, so through frustration the tantrums were worse. Does your speech therapist teech her to sign? I signed at home for basics and it helped, such as "more, different, help, sit" these types of things. Also at 3 I had her strapped into her kitchen booster and even though my daughter was uninterested at the time I bought from a local teacher store this big box of language cards (flash cards) and I would put the card into her hand or in front of her and say the word I would work on section at a time, the most important first like "foods", believe it or not while I thought she was uninterested she was absorbing everything and words would start coming out at random to make me realize that hey this kid is in there and she can communicate. So I persisted. It sounds like at her age unless she is well verbally developed she's frustrated and wants some control on her surroundings.
At t.v. time, get a board and cut out pictures of her favorite characters "barney, rolie polie olie", whatever, put velcro on the board and velcro on the picture, let her pick the character then choose 2-4 different videos from that character and let her pick the one, it gives her control of the situation and from her watching the titles of the show at the beginning, she will more than likely site read and be able to pick the one that looks good to her.
I don't mean to ramble but I've been there and hope this helps. Let me know. |
