I have a son who is 4 1/2 years old and he has been diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Delay. I guess that falls somewhere under the umbrella of Autism. I would like to get David to take vitamins and natural herbals, but, the difficulty I have is getting David to take them. He will take gummi bears (multivitamins), but, anything else.... he knows when you are trying to give him something. I have tried Peanut Butter, wrap candy around them to disguise the taste and mix it with some other foods to hide the smell and taste, but, in all honesty I have not been successful and I have, for now anyway, given up until at least he got a little bit older. Has anybody developed a fool-proof method of getting their children to take various types of medications? The examples of pills I am trying to get David to take are: Selenium, Omega Essential Fatty Acids, Calcium-Mg tablets, DMAE and Potassium. Also, I have a problem of getting David to sleep sometimes. He will wake up at 2-3 am in the morning wide awake and it is sometimes hard for me to get him to lay down. He goes until he just collapses from exhaustion and falls asleep. That is frustrating when he has to go to school. I have thought of trying Valerian, but, then again I have the problem of getting him to take the product. Does anybody have ideas on these problems? Your replies would be very much appreciated.
The multivitamin that we give my daughter Lauren (she's 26 months) is in a powder form. I mix it in with applesauce (it has a slight orange taste that she doesn't mind) or her rice cereal in the morning. I too am giving her a multitude of supplements and most are in capsules that I just break apart and put the powder in with the applesauce/cereal. If it's a pill, I use a pill crusher and again put it in with all the others. We use Nordic Naturals Omega 3 oil in the liquid form. Much easier to hide than those big gel like pills. It is lemon flavored. I think there are some other manufactures in oil form in other flavors. As far as sleeping goes, we're in the same boat. Ever since we started epsom salt baths and melatonin, things are getting better. I've also cut out her daytime nap. I'm not sure if that applies to you or not as your son is older, but although it makes for a crabby girl during the afternoon, at least I can get her down at a decent time. Goodluck! I do know that some people on here use weighted blankets and have some success with the sleeping when using them. Is this something that either of you have thought of trying? Just curious. Karrie my son is on a calium sup that disolves in water or juice my son thiks its fun that he can get fizzy drinks everydaynot sure if u can get them wear u r We give our daughter 1mg of melatonin at bedtime for sleep. Our neurologist recommended we try it and it works. I don't like to give it to her every night but when we all really need sleep it's a God Send! Run it by your doctor before trying it. Let me ask this, "what do you give him to drink before going to sleep?" Another question Do you do the "brushing technique". |
