Preschooler with PDD-NOS

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

My five year old son has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS by our public school's child study team.  One obstacle I am faced with is finding suitable daycare (before/after school care) for my son since I am a single, working mother.  I would appreciate any suggestions and/or feedback as to where I should start regarding my son's education.

Thank you.

Hi..i am also a single-mom looking for similar things..my 5 yr old jackson has been in k with his peers this year, we are still going through all of the school systems proceedures to determine him "autistic"(mild) but i have an 11 yr old as well as a 3 yr old and plan on going back to school in the fall..i am intensivly researching the "child care" issue..obviously the teenager next door is out of the question..somtimes jackson's behaviour is scary to those who are trained to deal with our kids..i will keep you posted on what i find out..while of course i deal with organizing the house, potty training the 3 yr old (yes my typical 3 yr old refuses) helping my 11 yr old with her math problems and oh yes paying the bills i should have dealt with last week!!!!smile..we will get through this together..and thank God i am not alone...good luck to you...

Hi, one suggestion that I could offer if there are no friends that understand autism and caring for an autistic child.  Contact your local CDDO - County Developmental Disablities Organization. They offer rescare services - when you are at work they can provide a "babysitter" X # of hours a week @X $  many families that recieve medicaide generally do not have to pay for this service.  I willl warn you that there may be a waiting list for these services.  I do know that there are facilities that can and are able to care for disabled children, but they are hard to find or too expensive.  The best defense for that of course is INTERVIEW and then do it again. If you have any questions feel free to pick my brain.

An added note to my previous posting, the people that do the respite services are HCBS (Home Care Based Services) trained and do work with disabled people, this is no fail safe make sure that they are when you interview people.  Also remember that even if you don't qualify for medicaide that you can sometimes do private pay for the case management and respite care services. (sometimes you'll get faster results - lack of paper worK!)

It is not easy to find childcare especially for children with ASD's.  You may want to contact some local church groups.  I am a single mother of three children ages 11, 10 & 8 1/2, the oldest two are on the spectrum.

At 22 months old my son was severely Autistic.  At 10 years old today, he is in a Special Ed transition class.  This class is for the children who will be going back to district.  It was not a miracle.  I have worked, advocated and cried for 8 years on this child's behalf.  He had intesive ABA since he was three years old.  If done correctly this modality can recover children from Autism.  My 11 year old daughter is proof.

Don't rely on schools, doctors, friends or family.  Educate yourself and follow your instincts.  The reward cannot be measured.  Time is key.

Dear Jill if you have a chance could you make some recommendations on reading material that will explain ABA a little more clearly for me thank you for your help.  I pray everyday that someday Margaret who is very high functioning may lose her diagnosis.  Thank you Jo Ann

Jo Ann,

I will gather some websites for you to visit on ABA.  Give me a day or so.  You may email me directly if you like.  I am very active here in NY.

Okay Jo Ann here you go.  Once you check these two sites out they will lead you to others.  This didn't take me long as Autism info is everywhere now.  I am a tried and true believer in ABA and have alot of hands on experience and trainning.  I will give you all the guidance and answer any questions you have.

I want to get on Oprah so that I can make parents aware that Autism can be cured in many cases, if diagnosed early and there are no physical reasons that are causing Autism like characteristics.

Let me know how you make out.  jillery@optonline.net

HI I ALSO FEEL WITH EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND THE RIGHT THERAPY PDD CAN BE CURED, MY SONS WAS DIAGNOSED AT THE AGE 18 MONTHS,HE DID ABA 30 HRS A WEEK, 5 HOURS OF SPEECH , AND 1.5 OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY. HE IS NOW 9 YEARS OLD FULLY VERBAL, IN REGULAR CLASSROOM HAS BEEN SINCE KINDERGARTEN. HE IS SOCIABLE, TELLS MANY JOKES, LOVE TO DANCE , PLAYS THE DRUMS. HE IS VERY SENSITIVE CHILD. LOVES ANIMALS , READING , WRITES COMIC BOOKS, AND IS INVENTING VIDEO GAMES.

THE ONLY TIME THAT I FEEL THAT HE SHOWS ANY SIGNS OF PDD NOS IS IF HE GETS ANXIOUS OR NERVOUS HE WILL PACE. WHICH IS EASILY REDIRECTED AND HE IS OLD ENOUGH WHERE HE CATHES HIMSELF, AND STOPS THE BEHAVIOR.

WE NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD BE HERE, DO NOT GIVE UP! INI MY OPINION THE MORE HOURS THE BETTER THE RESULTS!

GOD BLESS
