Has anybody tried Methyl-B12 shots

I've been chatting with a couple from NJ who have had some success giving their autistic son Methyl-B12 shots (aka MB12 or Methylcobalamin).

They got to a DAN dr in Edison, NJ who seems well known and has 80 parent testimonials on his website (http://drneubrander.com/)

They are also now tring the hyperbaric oxygen chamber (HBOT) thru this same doctor.

I just wanted to see if anyone out there had any stories (good or bad) about the MB12 shots, the HBOT therapy, or this particular doctor.

Thanks,

Frank

Frank,
We are doing the MB12 shots with Matthew.  Here is a thread I wrote about how Matthew is doing with it:

http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4328& ;PN=2

Thanks momtoMatthew!  Did you ever try the oral vitamin supplements DMG & Super Nu Thera?  Did you try everything seperately?  Can you tell if the B12 shots had a bigger effect than the other supplements?

I can't tell you how many times I've almost bought the trial sizes of DMG & SuperNuThera at Kirkman Labs and they I always chicken out.

So, now I'm going back & forth on trying the DMG & SuperNuThera on my own and then going to a DAN dr for the B12 shots...

As usual I'm confused

Matthew is on the Super Nu-Thera multi-vitamin w/out A & D.  He gets his A & D elsewhere.  We tried DMG but it made Matthew much more hyper so we eliminated that.  They have found that only about 20% of kids (I could be wrong about the number) can tolerate both the mb12 shots along with DMG.

I truly hope you will try this as it was one of the best things we've done for Matthew.

Here is a message board website of parents who are doing biomedical:

They are very helpful and are always willing to answer any questions you have.

We are giving dd MB-12, SuperNuthera, DMG and other minerals...as well as a probiotic.  She has severe yeast issues so we we have her on Nystatin for a couple months.  We are also doing the gfcf diet.

We have noticed a great improvement in dd's social and communication skills.  We definately noticed it after the MB-12.  I have just recently started having very short 2-way conversations w/ dd where she initiates the communication (simple questions such as what is that?)

We have her seeing a DAN doc who also happens to be a pediatrician.  The biomedical treatment is the best thing we have ever done.  We plan on starting the hyperbaric chamber next year.

I could have written Jenni's post  excpet for the two-way conversations, but Jaden is only 2....she has learned about 10 new words since Christmas, though  and has been on the shots since Dec 14th.

My son will be starting the MB12 injections as soon as I can get my hands on them. We have an apt the 10th of this month. I only wish it was sooner. Good luck with whatever you decide. My advise is to research it all you can and do what you feel comfortable with. Many parents on this board have had great success with     non-biomed treatmets. I wouldn't want to persuade you one way or the other. We all have to do what we feel comfortable with at the time. My son was dx'd at 3 and he is now 9 y/o. This is my first shot at biomed. I figure if it doesn't work, I can always stop. Good luck with whatever you decide. Hey funkyferris....get her to watch those videos on Dr N's site....that's what convinced me. Plus 'watching' Ruths (MomtoMatthew) son progress so rapidly. Reading her posts makes me soooo excited to get started. I hope my son does as well on them. I wish you luck. (just a hint...if you are trying to convince your wife...don't tell her the cost of the apt til it's over!! LOL just kidding. )

Thanks everybody.  I'm thinking of taking the leap and making an appointment with Dr. Neubrander.

Now I've got to convince my wife that this is worth a try.

just a hint...if you are trying to convince your wife...don't tell her the cost of the apt til it's over!! LOL just kidding. ) *********

AMEN to that

but so worth it

Andrew started on M-B12 shots in early January, prescribed by Dr. Neubrander's office.  After his first 5 week trial, I had a follow-up phone consultation and found out based on an extensive parent questionaire that I completed, that Andrew was a "moderate to significant responder" and I think that he is improving too!

I am now waiting for a delivery of supplements from Kirkman Labs.  I am very excited to be starting a systematic logical trial of supplements, and it is wonderful to have a "plan".

We are looking into the B12 shots for our daughter, but in the process came across a MB12 nasal spray developed by a Stan Kurtz.  Does anyone know if this is the same as the shots?  And is it as effective?

FYI we had our daughter on the Super Nuthera and DMG several years ago at age 14 when we were given the diagnosis of autism ( she's 25 now) and had great success- improved communication (noticed a big difference within 10 days!) and controlled mood swings/lessened irritability, etc.  After high school she found it to be too much to take all the pills required, plus she developed a strong dislike to the taste of the pills. IT became very difficult to get her to be consistent in taking them so we gave in and switched to a low dose of Prozac. We've had just as much or maybe a little more success in the same areas I mentioned above. We would like to give the shots, or even better the nasal spay, a try and get off the Prozac if we would get the same result.  It's been very interesting to find your comments on the subject.  Thanks!

My almost 3 year old son Andrew has been on the shots for about 3 months off and on.   I have worked him up to 1 shot per night for the next 2 weeks.  I have seen the biggest improvements with the b 12 over all of the other stuff we are doing (which is a lot od stuff).  He is happier, understands better, his language has picked up, etc, etc.  He is singing his heart out daily now- it's just amazing.  It has been great although he is a challenge to give the shots to- that is my only complaint other than the cost.

We have been doing the MB12 shots with my son since August through Dr Neubrander originally. We saw no changes the first 3 months. Going into the 4th month, they told us to supplement the MB12 with a vitamin powder supplement. I also started DMG and Nordic Naturals DHA oil at the same time (on my own, not as advised by Neubrander's office). That was when we finally started seeing some changes! He had a burst in speech that has been developing more and more each DAY! He really has "come to life" before our very eyes. It's like he was stalled out for a whole year and now is developing everything all at once.

I highly recommend doing the shots and the supplements. The shots we do in the middle of the night when my son is out cold. He never even flinches! I should add, we do also give him Melatonin to regulate sleep that has been a GOD SEND!!

Now, on the subject of Dr. Neubrander. We have recently stopped going to him and switched to a different DAN Dr, Dr David Dornfeld in Middletown, NJ. The reason I stopped Neubrander was because first of all, we NEVER actually SAW Dr. Neubrander. There you only see a nurse practitioner. Secondly, the practioner didn't seem to know one thing from the next. She is supposedly following the Dr's orders and could never even answer simple questions when we would ask her. She would tell us to just look in the "paper work." That being my biggest complaint about Neubrander's office. TONS of paperwork! It's not just the amount he expects you to fill out, it's the amount given back to you to read over. Now, I do suffer from ADD myself, so reading through a phone books size of "paper work" searching for one simple answer became unbearable. I did not like the attitude of his staff or his ridiculous policies with this lengthy ridiculous paper work. Oh and I got sick of paying $220 a month for no help what-so-ever and bad attitudes. The didn't even see us in person, just phone consultatiosn where they were basically gave me a new RX for the shots and vitamins and send me on my way with another moutain of paper work

Dr. Dornfeld, accepts our health insurance (we have CIGNA) and personally saw my son and spoke to my husband and I for an hour! He was personable and helpful. He is continuing the same supplements and MB12 protocol that Neubrander was for us. Plus he is going to start treating my son with mild hyperbarics which, in my opinion, his office handles a lot more safely and effectively than Neubrander's office does.

Hope all this info helps you and whoever else had questions regarding all this! If you have more questions, feel free to email me at DLH571@aol.com since I don't often get on this board much.

DebH39114.7479282407My  son was on the B12 shots for aprox 1 year.  I did see great improvements with him untill I was introducted to Monavie.  Once started on Monavie, his success went through the roof.  I stopped the B12 shots and now all he drinks is his juice(Monavie)

We did the b12 shots for about a year and really saw nothing.  We did all the supplements (SNT, DMG, TMG, on and on).  I have not really talked to people who had any real success as the kids got older.  John seemed to be helped by them from the ages of 2-about 6 and then when we started to see behaviors the DAN protocol (outside of the diet which we do do) didn't seem to help.  Plus if you do the supplements route and then decide to try mainstream meds.....the supplements will effect the medication.  Be careful of cost with the DAN doctors.  We saw one in Niagara Falls and he was VERY reasonable ($100.00 a visit and all labs went through our regular doctor so insurance covered)  Someone suggested seeing Dr. Ken Bock and after $2,000 in one appointment visit (you read that right) he wasn't able to suggest anything.

We are currently using a HBOT in home and we are on #34 dive!!!  We are seeing really cool things.....spontaneous language coming out all over!!!!!

Are the B-12 shots better than the capsules? I don't think my son will tolerate the shots. He will raise hell. Is there a substitute and where to find it? My son has beem on m b12 with dr. neubrander since May, as well as various vitamin supplements...I think it has helped him a little. Small changes- not what I was hoping for. I am keeping him on it because I keep hoping a big AHA!! moment will happen!!The best thing for him has been autistic prek class he started in October. That has helped the most. Sometimes, for my son  perosnally I am not sure how much or if any the biomedical stuff is really helping. We are doing B-12 as well

first with capsules
now with the shots

our child is making good progress

The concern about giving the mb-12 orally is that many ASD children may have problems diegsting and absorbing foods, vitamins, minerals in their gut so ther eis the possibility it could pass right through.  Plus, you are giving a specific form of b-12 - methylcobalamin (sp).  You an read more about it on Dr. Neubrander's site:

http://www.drneubrander.com/page2.html

The mb-12 injections are preloaded into the syringes (same as they use for insulin) by the Componding pharmacy.  There are only a handful of phamacies in the US who can do this because mb-12 is very unstable and has to be handled a certain way.  Many parents will give the injections while the child is sleeping, use a numbing cream or use an object called a Shotblocker that eliminates the initial sting when the needle is penetrating the skin.

I am new in here guys.. sorry but I can't seem to find what I am looking for.

I have a friend who has a 2 year old little boy who was about to be potty trained and being a normal child.. he has now gone into his own little world, won't speak, hurts himself.. etc.

He has taken him to a doctor that told him it could be autism, and the doctor set up an appointment to a speech therapist.  Is this a common thing?

I did a little research on here, and it seems only the speech therapist is for is to rule out a speech impedement.

I need some steps he needs to take like from the very beginning of this.  I am printing out him some info on the MB12 shots.

I found a DAN Practitioner close to him, can he just call there and set this up, or will he need to go through all these therapists to get a true diagnosis?  His insurance won't pay for the speech therapy, and he doesn't have a lot of money.  Will a good insurance pay for a DAN doctor?

Thank you very much for any help.

WE DO THE LIQUID B COMPLEX THAT GOES UNDER THE TONGUE.CAN GET AT WALMART. SPEECH THERAPISTS DO LANGUAGE THERAPY AND ARTICULATION THERAPY AND CAN WORK ON CAPD ISSUES ALSO. our ins. payed for the blood tests. They pay the allergie serums also. They do not pay the urine testing. I am also in NJ a state devistated by this dx.  My son is 2 w/ pdd-nos, ijust started the M b12 shots three weeks ago.  I do see a small but increasing improvement he is babbleing and new sounds.

I give them to him while he is napping and he just moans and goes back to sleep.  My Dan Dr. is in Marlton, NJ just a little closer to my home.
Tom, you need a doctor to prescribe MB12 shots. Have you considered a DAN doctor? Where do you live?

Hi BonBon,

I lived in DAllas TX.  I found a DAN doctor in My area and her name is DR Brooks.  I will go to her office today and talk with her about my son.  We tried accupucture + herbal and see a little improvement with our boy.  I am looking out there to find alternative way to improve my boys behavioral.  Did you see any result in B12 shots?  Any side effect that you see?  Thanks

Tom

How did your appt go today with the doctor?

Yes, do a trial of the shots! They were one of the best things we did with my girl! Get them from LeeSilsby pharmacy, or Wellness.

Here is one of my posts I made shortly after starting the shots with my girl, who was two at the time:

has shown noticeable improvement on the Methyl-B12 shots. Her eye contact is getting much better, her joint attention is exploding, and she is babbling more and more. She is happier most of the day now, where before she was mad most of the day....she is more active--climbing on things and playing more...trying to get Lance to wrestle with her....
We took her to Denise's last night and she was bearable at another home! That, my friends, is a miracle! Just a month ago, at Thanksgiving, she was so much work that I couldn't sit down for a minute, or have one conversation with someone unless she was on my hip. (which she didn't want to be for long!) So I am praising GOD for these glimpses of improvement in my baby girl.
Remember, autism is treatable!--

and more:

I posted just this morning that -- is showing great improvement on the Methyl-B12 shots, but what happened at naptime was just the gift I have been praying for...I took her down to her room and did the usual diaper change and turn on the soft music and try to talk with her, pray with her and get her to interact...I had written a previous post about how she doesn't look at me when I am tucking her in--ever since she was about a year old or so, she would just stare at her lights and music toys while I was praying, and even as I was leaving, she woudln't even notice....Well today as I was changing her diaper, she was very playful. I looked up and caught her staring into my eyes! And then she laughed when I talked to her! We played like that for many minutes and when I put her in bed, she continued to stare at me, smiling. It was as if she was seeing her Mama for the first time. I cannot even begin to tell you what this has done for my heart. I have wondered and waited for so long for her to do this. She is loving me back! I know she has a long way to go to recover, but I am grateful that God is merciful and kind enough to show me glimpses of what is to come...

A side note: she had also started meds for yeast and bacteria at the same time as the shots and i believe they had as much to do with all the improvement as the shots did.

Side effects: climbing, wetting more for about two weeks, 'mouthing' things.

Hi,

I have five years old boy who has autism.  I like to try Methyl-B12 injection.  Do you know how much is cost?  Where to order from website?  Thank you very much in advance.

Tom
