Reading Comprehension Resources

We have always had reading comprehension issues with my son (9, finishing 2nd grade) but I just got the results of his latest testing and it really worried me.  He is reading at 100% accuracy but his retell is way below grade level.  He is a hyperlexic kid who learned to read at 2 but has not interest in comprehension.

Anyone know of an "fun" reading comprehension reasources?  Computer games, IPAD apps, books?  We having been making him read out loud so long that I think he just shuts down and checks out.  I want to find a way that is motivating for him to undestand what he is reading.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Does the school use an empirically supported reading program, ie a program that is proven effective for improving comprehension?

Here in Norway my youngest son is using a book where the same text is presented three times.  If I remember correctly, the first page is just the text.  The second page is the text with missing words to fill in, and the third is the text with questions.  He normally hates to read the same text more than once, but for some reason this book works for him.  Of course it's in Norwegian, but I thought the format might be of interest.
