Flexible ABA?

Our daughter was recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS. She is mid to high
functioning. We are still learning about the various therapies, and
definitely are of the view that significant amounts of ABA therapy will be
most effective. However, I do feel that certain ABA proponents (including
some of the more reputable private schools/centers in the area - - we are
in NJ) are somewhat fanatical in their views, dismissive of all other
treatments and insistent that only the most precise and disciplined
application of ABA will be effective.

We have found programs that we liked that are ABA based but are not
necessarily as rigid (e.g. not 100% one-on-one, and they have task lists,
but are not necessarily going from station to station in timed increments
throughout the day), however, we do have concerns that it may be less
likely to be effective. Can a more flexible and in some ways lax ABA be
effective? We are fearful of going down a path just to decide 6 or 12
months later that we would have been better off in a more "hardcore"
program.   Would be curious hear people's experiences with different ABA
programs.
