potty trainingI am a single mother of 2 boys. My five year old was diagnosed with moderate autism a year ago. He has made SO many HUGE strides in that year. I am SO proud of him. Potty training was so difficult with us. I tried off and oN for YEARS, and he just would NOT go! I was really feeling judged as a parent, people saying that it was my fault, and how bad it was to have a 5 year old still not trained. One thing I know about my son, and many on the spectrum, is that when they do understand it, it happens fast. With everything, my son does, it is that way. Well two weeks ago I kept him home from day care one day, and he wore his underwear! By the end of the day he was TELLING me he had to go!!! He still has the odd accidents, and bowels are a HUGE issue for him, but I could NOT BE PROUDER.! When children are ready, they succeed. Congratulations to both him and you! I recently had the same thing happen with my daughter. I was getting so concerned that she kept refusing the potty at age 4 1/2 and was getting really frustrated. Then, the other week she takes out her "big girl underpants" and refuses to wear a pull-up! She has been going pretty consistently, but we still have a long way to go. I am still amazed that she just started doing it on her own after all of my failed attempts at pushing the issue. Sounds like both of our kids are making steps in the right direction...I'm with you - when they are ready they will succeed.![]() Congratulations!!!! I am still amazed EVERYDAY when I look at him... What an amazing stride for our little angels! Yes, it does take time. Kelton is still holding his bowel movements in and having the odd poop accident, because he HAS to go! But he has een woke me up the last couple nights saying, "Mom, I REALLY have to go to the bathroom!" That is HUGE success in my books! Congratulations. Just goes to show that the child really does know best, and will do things on their own time. They know what they are doing! lol My third and fourth son had troubles toileting. Third boy holds for excessive amounts of time and then developed stretched bowel. It actually has a name called encopresis. this is then treated through medicine to help the loading stop.
Forth son didnt toilet till he went to school. He also needed the help with a stool to keep his feet on. They dont like having their feet hanging. It feels unsafe. andthe same applies to the BM in the toilet. But there are some things that you cannot control. Congratulations!! |
