Pragmatic Language

What is Pragmatic Language? When they were testing my son in speech and language, they say that he is average on his proficiency of language, but he will need to go to a speech therapist because he has demonstrated that he is unable to successfully meet the communication demands in a classroom. I can read from the paper that it is a speech impariment, but I am still not too sure of what it is all about.  Sniffles, speech therapy (one to one) may help.  You've a bit of a challenge because he's an older child.  You'll likely need to do a lot of reinforcement at home.  There are all kinds of workbooks, programs, etc., etc. that can help with this outside of the school/therapy office.  We use something called "The Aphasia Workbook."  It's a huge binder filled with things we can do with our children to assist them with their speech issues (we have issues with receptive/expressive speech with both children).Hi

You can find a good description of pragmatic language at this website:
www.asha.org/public/speech/development/Pragmatics.htm

Many kids with ASD may test adequately for receptive and expressive language, but need to be taught pragmatics.

It is important to find a speech therapist that has expertise in teaching pragmatics. I think not all are the same in teaching this social part of language.

Good luck. My kids have come a long way in speech therapy (school + private), and I am sure your son will too.
