enzymes?? Please helpCan someone give me a quick 101 on enzymes? I know the overall intent and our DAN doctor recommended them, of which I have purchased some (but I have no idea if they're the "right" kind). But they are not something to be taken daily, correct? Our DAN doctor made it seem like they should only take them when they eat or are going to eat something against the diet. If someone could fill me in I'd deeply appreciate it. I gave both my kids 1 last night and they love love loved them! Which is great, but now they dont want to eat their chewable probiotics cuz the enzymes taste better. Go figure... One other thing, how do the enzymes work with the probiotics? Are they a supplement to the probiotics or something completely separate? Like I said, I have a basic understanding of how they're to work with their digestion system. And then separately understand how the probiotics work, but not clear on how they work together? Would it hurt my kids to give them enzymes once a day? Okay, thanks a ton!!! They should teach classes for this stuff! lol
I give DS enzymes before every meal. They help break everything down, not just the forbidden foods, so it helps the body absorb all the nutrients. We even saw some yeast die-off when we started the enzymes. Sorry I can't answer all your questions, but I'm a big fan of digestive enzymes overall - we use Houston Neutraceuticals AFP Peptizyde and Zyme Prime. Enzymes actually work against probiotics. You don't want to give them at the same time. We use enzymes at every single meal whether it has gluten/casein in it or not. They are a good aid to digestion and some of our kids have issues with that. They are beneficial to just about anybody, really. Probiotics are good bacteria for your gut. Something else that anybody (non ASD kids and adults included) will benefit from. They also boost immunity. If you give an enzyme at the same time as a probiotic the enzyme will eat the probiotic. So, if needed you can give the enzyme at the beginning of the meal, and the probiotic thirty minutes later (depending on whether you're giving it with food or on an empty stomach). Here's a good website: You can OD on anything, including water, so I'd imagine you could reach a point where the gut says enough is enough. Just give whatever dose is appropriate for your child's age/weight (however you've been instructed) or follow the labeled instructions--and give separately from enzymes. We give the probiotics with snacks and the enzymes with meals. Our metabolic geneticist was very pleased we were already giving these to our youngest. That was one of his first recommendations today, along with the GFCF diet (which we're already on) and the long list of supplements for the mito cocktail she's starting effective today. So can a child overdose on enzymes? Should they have one for snacks too?
Thanks for the info. I haven't checked the link above, but will this evening... hey which ezymes are you using? Maybe you could give it halfway through? I wouldnt' wait till the end, as some of the food will begin to digest already, by then. So we've been using ezymes and they are working great! My question is that I've been trying to give them before the meal, but find it easier to give it to them as a reward for after the meal...since they are oh so delicious! Does it have the same effect if I give the enzyme after they eat?? Or is it best to do before the meal? Thanks! Shanda |
