Self contained class hi-functioning kid?Ugh i forgot to add he has an IEP and gets pullouts for reading, writing and math and OT 1x a week. He also get at least 2 hours a day (i think more like 3 but not sure) of intensive 1 on 1 reading with a specialist as well as reading stations. He also gets/needs alot of 1 on 1 help from his reg. ed teacher and his teacher daughter is his class 2 so shes been assigned as his little helper (hes developed a big crush on her!) Sorry i have no edit button and thought that might be important info! I posted on an education forum for teachers asking for some advice on how to help my son in class to learn better. I listed the diff probs hes been having and ill list them again just for reference and for you opinions. Problems in school: not being alert in class, severe inattention, confused in class and when people and his teachers talk to him, regression in 5 diff subjects went from progressing to unable, F's on his progress reports, constantly forgetting things his teachers say that he knew before, 2 failed hearing tests (3rd one audiologist was called into the school and he passed), 1 failed eye test that i took him to and 1 passed eye test from the school except he failed his colors, not seeking out help and not trying things anymore, not being able to answer simple questions like what did he do over the weekend or following directions and needing some 1 on 1 help to finish classwork. His reg. ed teacher and special ed. resource room teacher has called/written me with concerns. They kept on asking me what my sons doctor found out concerning his recent problems and this has been going on for 2 to 3 months. He also had a possible seizure on the sp. needs bus he rides and seemed unresponsive deep in thought starring and had to be led down the step by the bus aide and led by me across street to our house where he did snap out of it. He has a heavy rapid blinking tic he does often in school (ruled out as seizure by 24 hr eeg) and i brought it up to his teachers and they said he is just doing it to get out of answering thier questions or that he is blocking them out. I know this is not true at all. I just started him on clonidine for tics last night. His doc said he cannot prescribe any stimulants to help with his attention for awhile because it will make his tics worse and he had a 24 eeg that was clean. He takes tegretol for a seizure dis he has. Ok! now that thats out of the way. The teachers (who were sp ed teachers and some who taught in self contained classes themselves) said he may do better in a self contained class. I couldnt imagine my son being in self contanied class he seems too high functioning. I have a meeting with his IEP team in 2 weeks to review his IEP and address these new concerns as well as to see whether or not to change his classification from SLD (which it is now) to AUTism (which I myself requested they change it too but they told me earlier his autism is not interferring with school-this was before all these issues) so i dont know if thats even what they are going to suggest themselves (self contained) but if they do what should do u think? Thanks! How long ago did these problems start? Do you think the support he has in his present placement is adequate and helpful? Why do they think he would do better in a self contained classroom? Have you been to the self contained classroom? Are there any other kids at his level or higher at in the self contained room? Concernedpa. Its me SHOLOW. Firefly helped me get back into my old profile! His teachers/school has not suggested a self contained class yet, they have just voiced thier concerns to me over the past few months. I got the self contained class input off of a special education forum I went on to get some advice on how to help him so it got me thinking after a mojority of the poster (who were sp. ed. teachers/self contained class teachers themselves) suggested it might be better for him. The problems started sometime in November. I think the supports he has in his current placement is alot. His teacher gives him alot of 1 on 1 help and he has a buddy who helps him with things as well and he is paired up with. The only thing that would be more is if he had a classroom aide. If they did suggest a self contained classroom i would def. go see it first. Im pretty sure he goes back and forth as opposed to spending 1 chunk of a time frame in his pullouts/therapy sessions. I dont know how the schools self contained classes work at all? Part of me would like him to be in a self contained class (I too can certainly see how helpful they can be with such individualized teaching and smaller class sized, i love that about it) but a part of me would rather they try an aide first. What do you think? BTW I have absolutely NO clue what they will be proposing at the IEP review (that i have called!) I just want to be prepared since the opinions of multiple sp. ed teachers i have asked suggested self contained as better placement, if the school does bring it up I want to be able to speak about it instead of being in shock at the very suggestion of it! Thank you everyone for replies i appreciate it!
It sounds like he is already spending most of the day outside of the gen. ed. class (for reading, writing, and math). Does he spend this time at the resource room in one block of time or does he go back and forth? Transitions are hard on our kids, so you might want to consider this. If he does go to self-contained room, would he still join the gen. ed. kids for library, music, etc.? _________________________ mom to 10 year old boy/girl twins (Asperger's/PDD-NOS)It sounds like he is spending a good bit of the day out of the gen ed anyway. If he was self contained could he spend time in the gen ed for specials or x amount fo time. It might be best considering he needs the extra. I love that my son is in a self contained classroom. Not very many kids, plenty of really caring and supportive teachers and therapists. He has worked up to leaving 2 hours a day to go into "specials" with the "regular kids". He has grown so much confidence and lost so much anxiety over the 3 years he has been there. It's been a blessing! He does age out of that class in September, but will be going into another similar kind of setting at the local school (he was being bussed outside of district to a BOCES TEACCH program). That will be a rough transition for him, I know, but I believe it's time for him to come back to the school near his house. And his brother will be in the same school, so that will be nice. The other children in my son's program are of different functioning levels. Some higher then my son ... some lower. But the teach each kid at their individual levels. Kids that have higher acadmenic skills leave the classroom with an aid to go to a general ed setting for math or reading or whatever. Kids like mine with very low academics get one on one teaching with the SPED teacher, but get out with the general ed kids for things like are, gym and music (with an aid of course). |
