How should I approach this? Help me!busy3timemom, its me Sholow. Firefly the administrator got me back into my old profile which had me locked out for awhile. Thanks for the tip! I will certainly use it next time hes having an episode. I have written up a letter requesting an FBA for him, thanks for the suggestion! Did he have a 24 hour EEG? Sometimes it takes a 24 hour to pick up seizure activity, if he did not have a 24 hour one, I would call the neurologist and request one, if he does not want to provide one, get a second opinion. I would also ask for a Functional Behavioral Ananlysis to be performed by the school, this will give you insight into his behavior patterns at school and will allow them to decide if what they are seeing is behavioral or neurological. Busy3timemom, thank you for replying! He did just have a 24 hour eeg and it was clean. Thats when his neuro concluded it was tics. He does the facial tics constnatly and i pressed the button on the eeg thing to record it 18 times and nothing abnormal showed up when the doc reviewed it. However the bus incident where he was completely staring unresponsive happened after the 24 eeg unfortunately which his neuro said DID sound like a seizure. He has an FBA but not for his recent problems. i will ask for that. If they decide its nuerological what will they do tho? Thank you! Sadly, 24 hour EEG's do not pick up all seizure activity either, I have a fabulous pediatric neurologist here in Michigan...one piece of advice that he gave me when we were trying to identify a seizure in my daughter was when we thought she may be having a seizure, pinch her earlobe as hard as we could to see if she responded to the pain, it makes sense as children do not react to painful stimuli while having a seizure. The FBA will just give you more documentation by trained staff that there "IS" something going on with your child, and if it is behavioral will help get the school on board with helping to handle that, if it is not behavioral it will help forward your argument with the neurologist. Im probably being impatient but no one seriously? Puuuleeease! I feel lost with this!I just got back from my sons nuerologist today and listed tons of concerns I had for my son that have come up within the last couple months. The concerns his teachers have and have been telling me about is: not being alert in class, severe inattention, confused in class and when people and his teachers talk to him, regression in 5 diff subjects went from progressing to unable, F's his progress reports, constantly forgetting things his teachers say that he knew before, 2 failed hearing tests (3rd one audiologist was called into the school and he passed), 1 failed eye test that i took him to and 1 passed eye test from the school except he failed his colors, not seeking out help and not trying things anymore, not being able to answer simple questions like what did he do over the weekend or following directions and needing alot of 1 on 1 help to finish classwork. His reg. ed teacher and special ed. resource room teacher has called/written me with concerns. He gets pullouts for reading, writing and math and he gets OT 1x a week. The things I had noticed at home was hyperactivity up esp in the evenings, alot of oppositional behavior and talking back, not listening, yelling, aggression hitting, agitatioin up esp after school much meltdowns, sensory issues with wearing jeans recently will not wear them and requests his soft pants w/out the bumpies, blood curdling sc reetching noises out of nowhere, weird guinea pig squeal noises, throat noises, humming and throat moaning, lip smacking and tongue clicking and blowing air thru lips constantly, complaints of legs/thighs and knees hurting in evenings and now in the mornings when he wakes up occasionally, he keeps saying he feels weird or different and its because such and such isnt the same (for instance we are catsittingmy sisters cat and he doesnt like that thigns feel diff cuz the cats here.... not abnormal but abnormal since he hasnt been stuck on sameness as much like he used to be) and day before yesterday he was dazed and in a trance-like when i got him off the school but he had to be led off by the bus aide and me across the street to our house till he snapped out of it. Ok those are all the things that have been happening (sorry so long!) O and also what started all this off was heavy frequent blinking and upward eye rolling, head to chin jerks and eyebrows frowns. The docs conclusion is that he has a ton of tics and possibly turrets syndrome and gave us a prescription for clonidine 1/2 tablet at night to help. Bus incident sounds like a seizure but since his eeg was so nice i have to keep tabs and call in if it keeps happening. He kept asking if my son was suffering motor regression? He hasnt that im aware of. He said his school problems seem to be from bad attention problems but he cant be put on a stimulant right now cuz it will make his tics even worse. He said the school has to figure something out to help him to learn better. I have a feelign that they were hoping the doc would fix all these problems but maybe not? On his last IEP meeting we have in the notes we will meet again in february to see if he qualifies for an autism dx (something i requested since hes only classified as SLD). What kinds of things do you think would be helpful to address my sons issues? What should I be asking for? Just give me any advice u can think of! Thank you all! |
