Fish Oil

The general rule, if there is such a thing, is 20 - 60 IU (or MG) of Omega 3 per kilo of body weight.  We do max dosage; and the brand we use contains both EPA and DHA.  The essential fatty acids (EFA) are needed to build (rebuild) connections in the neuro pathways.  It can help with cognitifive issues (focus, attention) as well as issues with aggression (in some kids).  Also good for vascular health and you'll likely see some improvement in skin/hair condition.  EFA's are good for everyone.

In children, if you're doing an EFA, you're also going to want to do EPA/DHA (at least according to our docs).  If its in the EFA product, it makes life easier.  We're using Nordic Naturals for our little one and Natural Factors for the eldest.  Its whatever you can find that your kiddos can tolerate; and if they can tolerate, whatever has the highest levels of DHA/EPA.

Our developmental pediatrician recommended we start Melatonin and Fish Oil  Melatonin for sleeping.  I wasn't real clear what the fish oil is for.  For those of you using Fish oil can you explain the benefits?  Also, how much would you give a 6 year old that is about 50 pounds?

We use coromega twice a day for my kiddo - he's about 43 pounds.  I don't have it nearby right now to list the dosage, but it's a good healthy one.  I've never heard of it for help with sleep, but it makes sense.  My son's attention span increased a lot when we started it, and his receptive langauge really picked up, so maybe it does help with sleep.

Melatonin, on the other hand, is AWESOME for sleep!

our other major complaint was a lack of focus and hyperactivity so the fish oil might be more for that.  Unfortunately the dr didn't tell us how much and we are running into problems getting in touch with her.We use this, I put it in a smoothie.http://www.amazon.com/TwinLab-Emulsified-Norwegian- Orange-Ounces/dp/B001G7QG4K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc& ;qid=1264361360&sr=8-1-spell  My children LOVED the Barleans smoothie ones too.
