Help..new to PDDHi, I'm assuming from your username, that you're from Texas. If so, there is a great parent online support group for Texas here: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Texas-Autism-Advocacy/ Has the school looked into conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) which can be used to develop a behavior plan based on positive behavior supports? This is something the school's special education team should be familiar with, if you want to ask them about it. I'm in Texas, so if have any questions about state or districts, please feel free to let me know. Nicole (and please sign up for my autism newsletter. Link below) Hello, My six year old son (he is actually a twin) has, what I believe to be PDD. He certainly suffers from sensory issues, such as aversion to loud noises and has particularly bad temper tantrums. We have had him evaluated by a developmental pediatrician and he has seen a psychologist, but we have yet to get a PDD diagnosis, although we did get ADHD. That said, he is very communicative and has tested at an IQ of 120 or so. At the age of 5, he can read on a 5th grade level. On the other hand, he is having a terrible time at school. He gets frustrated easily and goes into meltdown mode. He will attempt to flee the classroom, on occassion. He has gone as far as hitting and biting his teacher. We even see some of these temper tantrums at home, but most definitely see them at school. We have tried stimulant medications (Focalin, Concerta, etc) and nothing has an effect. Any ideas or similar experiences out there? I feel that his biggest hurdle is settling into school. Have you requested an IEP evaluation by the school? Yes, both of my boys have an IEP for their issues with fine/gross motor skills. |
