Response to Teacher?Possibly what you are seeing is lack of generalization. E.g., your child does know these things when in school, but does not understand that they also can be used at home. I see it in my kids. About all I can suggest is to find out what the school is teaching and then try to use it, teach it at home to help the generalization along. Here in Sweden the teachers are instructed only to report on the "good things" about the children and their progress. They tend to look the other way on when things get dicey.. I am tired of just receiving reports on what my child does well. Like reading at a higher level and writing about a certain subject that my child perseverates on. I know my child can do these things it happens daily under my nose at home. What I want are reports on the challenges my child has. For instance today, the note that came home stated that they had a drama instructor come by and taught them how to greet people. They said my child (y7 years old) did well in the class and understood like all the other typically developing students in the room. I asked my child what was done in the special drama class today and my child's response was I do not know. This is my child's response to so many things. I believe my child cannot communicate after but somehow manages to understand what is going on in the moment but once it happens it is forgotten since it is not a preferred thing like dinosaurs, bakugan or pokemon. I am at a loss what to say to the teacher when they keep telling me my child understands everything in the class. They have no autism training and have clearly said that they can manage my child just fine without it. My child is falling through the cracks because of the high intellegence, but yet cannot carry on a 3 turn conversation with another child. Any advice? We went today to speak to a psychologist and they indicated that by law the school can do whatever it wants, it does not have to listen to drs. if it does not wish to. Any advice would be helpful because I must do this on my own in a country that does not dx this early or believe in a early dx such as we received in the US when my child was 2.5 years old.
