KindergartenHi My son will be turning 5 years next november and the school district wants to put him in kindergarten. Though he is academically ready, he has so many other issues like self help, social immaturity and language delays. Can we ask the school district to continue in the preschool for one more year and then transition him to kindergarten?? Do we have to take a lawyer?? Has anybody gone thru this?? Help! btw we are in bay area. Thanks UV DD did a second year of pre-K. I think it was the right decision because it added another year of social skill development. She goes to a private school and the school accommodated a second year of pre-K (actually, they suggested it). I'm surprised that your district is pushing for a 4yo to start kindergarten. Most districts have a September cut off and would not enroll a 4yo with a November birthday without making a special exception. Has your son had an IEP? Perhaps you should get that going to help make your case.If it is a state funded preschool, I believe they have age requirements, and once they are old enough to register for kindergarten, than they can no longer go to the preschool. I sent my dd to private preschool and did a pre-k program, and she started kindergarten at 6 years old.I would talk about what your options are. It varies by state. You may be able to do a half day of K and a half day of preschool. Maybe your child could go to preschool everyday or in the morning in afternoon session depending on how your district runs it You may want to visit the kindergarten classroom and see how it is run. If it is alot of academics, pre-k may be the right thing for your son if he needs to work on socialization and playing./ |
