ASD and Dyslexia questionIf he is dyslexic he would benefit from a program like Lindamood-Bell, to help with reading, spelling, visual processing. Our school district does not provide specific instruction for dyslexia. Dyslexia will impact all of his learning in some way if he has it. I think your son is far enough behind grade level to look into testing. If you can, do it privately and ask for recommendations by the Doctor about school. Wrightslaw.com has some great information about dyslexia and also researched based information. My ds has an educational diagnosis of autism spectrum and is in a resource room that specializs in asd. However he also is significantly behing in reading/writing and spelling. (He is in 4th grade, writes at K level, spells at 1st grade level, reads at beginning 2nd grade level, has above average IQ). Should he be evaluated for dyslexia ? I understand that asd is an overriding category and it would not change his placement (nor should it in my opinion) and he does have reading/writing/spelling goals on his IEP . Should he still be evaluated for dyslexia? Does anyone know the rule? |
