Questios for sped teachers-thanks

I had some really helpful responses from sped staff here -please help me out again: I had concerns about my ds's IEP being implemented -I could not get a clear answer on what curriculums are being used or how/where he gets services. I made a request for copies of all documents/datasheets ..from the resource room for this school year (which is considered his home room). He has 6 goals adding up to about 2.5 hours resource room direct service minutes daily. At least two are written as daily documentation and our district requires a review every 6 weeks. The paperwork I finally got was 1 reading assessment (Oct) and four pages with my sons handwriting (about 10 words each) That was it. I am alarmed. I did schedule an IEP meeting. I have my thoughts on this, but in your expert opinion -what is going on and what should I ask the teacher.

Hi,

I am a special education teacher, but I doubt I could be considered an expert... but I think you deserve more from your child's special education teacher.  In our state, goals need to be monitored a minimum of once every two weeks.  There should be a data point on a graph made two times a month, or every other week.  Parents are sent a copy of the IEP goal and graph once every six weeks.

In my opinion, if you asked to see progress monitoring, you should see more than one reading assessment and a few handwriting samples.  Teachers are responsible for keeping this data, so I'd call and ask to speak to the special education consultant or the school principal.  The IEP is a legal document and the school cannot be out of compliance.

I would ask to see the "daily documentation" but I probably would ask for copies of it, that could be a lot of paperwork, but at a conference or open house, I always show the parents the point sheets we keep in our special education room and where we write the daily documentation.  If they want copies for some reason (dr. apt, court, etc.) I always get them copies ASAP.

I hope you find out more information soon.
