Newbie with questions

Ok, just typed a huge response and lost it - here goes in a nutshell.

Get the books Children with Starving Brains by Mccandless, Healing the 4A Disorders by Bock, and a cookbook - either the Kid Friendly ADHD/Autism Cookbook or Special Diets for Special Kids Cookbook.

Start one supplement at a time, start at a low dose, and build up slowly.  And consider going fully on the gluten, casein, soy free diet.  The enzymes provide great support, but nothing can replace just taking those elements out of the child's diet.

b12 can kick up yeast, so a good probiotic is helpful.  Cod liver oil and omega 3 supplements are also great things to go ahead and get started.  There are a hundred others, but just worry about one at a time.

Biomed overall has been tremendous for us.  The main things that have helped w/DS's language have been the diet, treating yeast with nystatin, coromega (omega 3), and Enhansa.  It's different for every child, so if you can get to a DAN doctor, that can be really helpful.  If you can't, just get one or both of the books, and they're great guides to the basics.  Most of it you can do on your own without prescriptions.

Hello, I just discovered the board and thought it would be a perfect place to ask questions about my son. He is 3, and dx with autism 4 months ago.  He began speech and occupational therapy 6 months ago before his diagnosis. He also started a headstart program that works with him for 3 hours a day 4x a week. After so many weeks of research, I've come across other treatments for my son, such as biomedical that I would like to implement. I asked his pediatrician, who is actually specialized in autism about doing this and he said most of it was bogus and would just make my son unhappy and miserable. However, I've read so many testimonials from people about the use of vitamins, enzymes, and diets; that I just can't ignore--I mean if there is a way my son can get better I have to try it. I've already purchased enzymes to break down gluten and casein, sublingual methyl b-12, and something else that rids his body of lead and mercury. Is there anything else I should get? He has no speech and no understanding of directions or words spoken to him, is there anything that would help that. Also, I just need some encouragement and hope that this can work, even if just a little--I need hope. Thank you and sorry for such a long post.Thank you for providing such great information. There's just so much information, some say do this, some say don't do that; so I am trying to figure out what is right and what is the wrong approach. I will definately get the probiotics, and I have the cookbook for autism/adhd. Do have a suggestion on where to get the supplements and enzymes. I purchased from ourkidsasd.com, but I don't know if there are better products to buy from. Thanks again for your helpful information.I'll have time for a longer post tomorrow, but jsut wanted to let you know that if you order at least $40 from ourkids (which I use all the time!), enter the word FREE in the coupon code for free shipping.I am always amazed at doctors who say biomedical will make the children miserable and unhappy. How can treating thier issues make them unhappy?? If this doctor had chronic diareah or constipation, would he want someone to overlook it and make him suffer without help???? Ugh. Vent over.
