Bell Ringing Sensitivies Unaddressed

My child was walked to a church the other and was fearful that the bells would go off.

Well, unfortunately, they did.  The teacher was satisfied that my child laid his/her head in the teachers lap and tolerated it through the whole sermon.  The teacher rubbed my child's back to soothe him/her.

My question.... What should the school have done to help the situation?  They knew that my child was sensitive to sounds, but thought nothing of marching him/her down the street without any warning.

My child came to me the morning of and asked me if the bells were going to ring at the church when they were there and I did not know what to say.

I do not want this to happen again, but I think because of their lack of autism knowledge they just clearly do not think of these things.

I don't know if there is anything that can be done about the bells. Is it a part of the program that can't be changed?

You might show them this article, particularly item number 8 on the list: http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/IRCA/TempleGrandin/TeachingTips. html
