Now they say Selective Mutism

Ugh...I'm so frustrated.  I asked for an IEE as just a records review.  I selected the PhD that reviewed my dd's records.  She has already been dx PDD-NOS, but the school won't acknowledge that dx saying she doesn't meet the ed code definition despite that their goals for her include, language, social skills, and sensory integration.....Unfortunately, they have insisted for years in meeting notes that my dd exhibits the ability to interact at an age appropriate level with peers in some situations.  This is the school psych's opinion.  Her teachers have never said she interacts in an age-appropriate manner.  In fact, they always make the comment she is interacting more, however, not like other kids her age do.

So, now this new pysch reads the records and says the diagnosing doc used the wrong module of the ADOS because my dd's language skills were not  high enough for that module, therefore, the results are unreliable.  She says my dd should be evaluated for Selective Mutism.  She says she may have a PDD, but doesn't have enough symtpoms...hmm she is just reading reports didn't see my daughter.  This really got me, she says my dd's restricted interests, regid behaviors, and stereotypies may be an elaborate attempt to keep people from demanding too much from her.  So she is pretending to be autist so people will leave her alone?

I'v read the DSM IV criteria for Selective Mutism and it states the person must have adequate knowledge of the language expected in the social situation....given that she has a severe language delay/disorder I would think that would preclude qualification.  Furthermore, I would say talking about Dora the Explorer at age 9 is not an age appropriate social interaction...

Any opinions?  Has anyone been faced with the Selective Mutism card?

On the bright side, the doctor did say regardless of the qualifying condition, the Distrtict's IEP is not adequate for my dd's needs.  Not enough speech and language and they incorrectly interpreted the results of her visual motor test.  She also said the District's offer of 20 minutes of counseling a month will be in effective regardless of the cause of dd's social problems and recommended 60 minutes a week.  I know they won't change anything, but at least I can say their offer appears in appropriate given my dd's disabilities.    Pee - YEW!  I smell and artsy-fartsy Freudianist shrink who don't know doodly!  Trying to imply our kids' behavior has behavioral origins ...

Was this a district-approved IEE?  I do not trust em!!  I actually got a list of district approved SLPs to do an IEP on my son .... googled em and they ALL had some vested relationship with the district!

do your homework, find a good, reputable Developmental Pediatrician, and get a re-eval ASAP.  And hand the district the bill!
