iep student progress....Hello Everyone, So tomorrow is my DS iep student progress meeting. I wanted to know if its like the 1st iep? I was told that we were discussing goals. Is this part of the iep process during the yr? Are goals increased? Thanks for the input, feeling uneducated, lol Jess More than likely, they will provide you with documentation showing how your child is progressing toward the year-end goal, and you can see what is working, what's not working. If your child has mastered the goal, then you need to determine what the next goal is going to be, and push to have that added to the IEP, rather than simply focusing on what's left. If you child is making suitable progress toward meeting that goal by the school year's end, then great. If they are not, then the goal needs to be revisited to determine whether to "downsize" it into more manageable bites so progress takes place, or whether the teaching methods used to work on that goal are ineffective with your child. Many parents who have not been in the IEP process long enough to become well-educated in it misunderstand the process and think it is the school that pushes the IEP forward. IEPs are actually parent-driven - the parent is the engine that drives the IEP process by constantly stays on top of establishing goals and moving the child forward in their education and holding the school accountable for doing so. You are the only one at that IEP table that has the long-term vision of where you want your child to be as an adult - the goals established are the baby-steps to help get them there. While IEP meetings usually occur yearly to evaluate the IEP, you can call a team (his teachers/therapists) meeting, or if necessary an IEP meeting (with the administrators, etc) at any time you need to address an issue or wish to discuss progress. Don't leave it up to the school to do so, you initiate the process instead. Take a look at wrightslaw.com, and take advantage of the opportunity to learn everything you can about the process and how to be an effective advocate for your child, particularly as you are just now starting the process. Just be cautious, my dd's school has historically used this progress "IEP" as an attempt to reduce services. If you feel that there are things that have come up and need to be addressed, you can add goals at this time.
